River shooting question. Where do I stand legally?

River shooting permission has been asked numerous times but this thread is a little different.

Ran into a spot of bother during the weekend while out duck shooting on a river, was down at the river shooting duck then drove the car up the passage through land which I have permission on and the gates were locked. Waited as I seen a Jeep leave the river bank earlier, he came back and said id no right to be shooting there as it was "Private" and had signs up saying so. The signs were up, but I interpreted this as private for fishing.

What is the story here? I have permission to access the river through a farmer I know, but then a river stretch minder (big salmon river) said its private, and private is for all sports. Taught shooting rights on rivers didn't fall under the same as fishing ownership rights and so much of the river bank is public right of way.
The farmer I've got permission off doesn't know the exact story with regards to the shooting side of things on the river.

Don't want to be done for poaching or illegal activities so all advice would be appreciated.

once the lad that has the fishing rites doesnt have the shooting rites you should be perfectly legal to shoot the duck,if you have the permission of the lad owner find out if he owns the shooting rites, most of the ducks you shoot will be over his land anyways

Talk to the local ranger, generally shooting rights and fishing rights are 2 separate things. However most shooting rights go back to the estate houses so youd need to be sure. However, you can shoot most of the bigger rivers and lakes once granted a forshore license, the list of rivers and lakes are on page 2

lads of the topic slightly but I got my foreshore last year for a lot of the midland lakes. What I was wondering is do you have to put down sea areas on the application or does any foreshore licence cover you for the sea areas.
It doesnt have the sea areas listed do you just write them down seperatly.
    thanks

Friend of mine in the homeland - Kerry - does a lot of duck shooting. He was parked down a lane and gone duck shooting. Local poachers frequent there as it's a great spot for salmon. Often remarked that they hadn't a clue when he was around with that 'camo gear'.

When he came back to the car one evening after duck shooting the four tyres were slashed - 6'-8' slashes.....2 on each tyre.

Had to leave the car there and return in the morning with cavity blocks so he could remove 4 wheels & tyres....then transport them to tyre replacement outfit......then return and fit.

Cost him €280 plus a wasted morning missing work & tying up a friend as well with transport and a trailer.

He guesses it was the poachers but couldn't prove it.....but is very hesitant to return and park at that spot. Reported it to Gardaí, Fisheries Baliffs, NPWS etc. who were all very sympathetic and digusted with such behaviour. They all promised to keep an 'eye' on the spot but couldn't patrol 24/7, which is understandable.

Poachers were never caught doing anything illegal although the authorities did bump into them on numerous occasions since at the spot.

It was a great duck hunting spot but sadly it now seems the poachers will have it to themselves.

Had the exact same problem myself. There is a stretch of river about a mile long and I have permission from the landowners to shoot away on both sides if I want, Got major hassle 2 or 3 times when out off lads in the fishing club saying it was for "club members only" even though I was shooting and not fishing.
It turns out a water bailiff has no say in the shooting rights , only the fishing rights, I had full permission off the land owners and that's all that mattered and I even checked with the local wildlife ranger (who was up to his eyeballs dealing with ****ers netting the river) but that's another discussion. In the end I was in the right and had the shooting rights on the river and land in question and obviously wasn't shooting around or disturbing the lads fishing.

But as someone else said about tyres getting slashed... yep happened alot in our gun club with anti's last year and one lad had his windscreen smashed on the first day of the pheasant season ! Be careful where you leave your jeep/car
