    Hi folks,
I was using a HP Pavillion Slimline pc up to about a year ago when the company got me a new Compaq with Windows 7 etc. The HP connected to the LG flatscreen monitor via a DVI-I cable and the Compaq via a VGA. No problem there as the screen could take either. But last night I decided to re-connect the HP to retrieve some old photos that were on it and when I swapped cables and booted up the pc the screen would not come on. It kept going back to power saving mode.
Any ideas what may be the problem?
    Thanks in anticipation.
    Sean

What type of LG Monitor is it?

Did either computer or the monitor itself happen to come with a DVI - VGA converter?

There may be a button on the monitor that allows you to choose the source for it - handy for switching between VGA and DVI however it usually does it automatically.

Also, when you're switching back to turn on the HP, have you unplugged the VGA cable from the monitor completely or is it still plugged in and just not attached to the Compaq?

Hi Kantes, Thanks for coming on the case.

    1) LG Flatron L194WT-SF
    2) No. There was no DVI-VGA converter with either.
    3) Yes I detached the VGA cable completely.
What's baffling me is that when last disconnected it had been working and I just swapped cables and pc. Nor did I have to change any settings in the monitor to change to VGA. I have checked the menu and cannot find any changeover setting.
Hopefully this may help you to help me!
    Again thanks, Sean

There is a vga plug on the back of the pc but i'ts covered by a plate saying "Do no remove"

It sounds like you might have run into the DVI Power Save problem which is apparently quite common with NVidia graphics cards. Not sure if you're using one. I'm assuming there's not a VGA port along with the DVI port on the HP but this Dell troubleshooting page deals with the problem you sound like you're having so it might be able to help

    http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/peripherals/f/3529/t/6351135.aspx

(also this is the zip they're talking about, you don't have to call them - http://www.jeffgeiger.com/Stuff/DVI_Recover.zip).

I know it might not be able to help as you can't seem to get any sort of picture.

Could you tell me which model HP Pavilion you also have?

It says s3050.uk Prod#RY930AA on the side bar code but Pavillion s3000 on the back.
    Thanks again Kantes.

There is a vga port on the back but it has a cover saying do not remove.

I think the VGA port is there but it's non-functioning, not actually connected to anything in the computer or else just disabled completely.

However after looking up the manual of the monitor you're using I realise now I think we're actually using the same monitor and I do find mine to be quite fiddly when switching back and forth etc so it should be solvable.

Are there 5 buttons on back of the right hand side of the monitor?

    This picture should help -

The second button down should be the source button if this is the monitor I'm thinking of. I'm not sure if this was what you were referring to when you said there was no changeover button or if you meant in the on-screen menu. Try pressing this while everything is turned on

    Hi Kantes,
Apologies for not getting back to you sooner but have'nt had time to think all week. Yes we seem to have the same monitor. Just after connecting all again and tried the source button as you recommended but no change. Completely baffled at this stage.
Again many thanks for all your trouble.
