What happened to my computer?

Everything is gone, programmes, documents, photos, etc. Just a black screen. When I click start down in the corner the few things like search, control panel, etc come up allright but everything else seems to be gone. I recently changed from Norton to Microsoft security essentials so it must be a virus problem.
A message then came up saying there is damage on the hard drive.
I wonder where do I go from here?

What operating system are you running?

It looks like your machine created a new profile. (Common XP problem).

Reboot in to safe mode and log on as administrator (pressing F8 while machine is booting up).

You should be able to go in to c\documents and settings\your name\ and find your files are still there.

    It's windows xp.
I'll try that later when I get home, thanks. How do I reboot it in to safe mode?

Press F8 on startup usually.but i have come across variants like pressing F5 or F12 on startup.Try F8 firsrt though.its the usual one.And when you get it up and working again, do a full virus check and a malware check too. For malware try googling Spybot S&D (search and destroy), free download, good app.Anti-virus- if you dont have your own, try AVAST free download too.good luck.
