Avoid all original model diesel 6s

You'd be better off with a 1.8 petrol.

    Or 2.0 petrol.

    Or some other diesel car

Presumably the op is going diesel for a reason

Right so I take it I shouldn't touch this year and model of a mazda,it's such a nice spec.

Yea it's a diesel I need and with a budegt of no more than €4000! Let the searching continue............

As above, the mazda diesel is renowned for suffering major issues as the mileage rises. Pity as the mazda 6 in general is such a good car.

I can confirm this "such a good car" as I have one for last 2 months and I'm definitely more than happy.
    It's 2.0 petrol though.

What is it that makes these Mazda engines so disastrous?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,129 ✭✭✭coolbeans

Turbos are one thing but failure of lubrication to big end bearings and other vital systems points to a fundamental design failure.

Extremely prone to big end failure, regardless of how well they are serviced in many cases.

    Ah, I see.

Would many cars escape this though?

Hard to say but its pretty widespread. I wouldn't chance it as I've stripped a few to see if they were repairable and in every case the crank couldn't be salvaged....and a new crank is over 2.5k on its own:eek:

They must do, there are many still around after almost 10 years! I had one for 3 years and did around 20k per year on it. Mate has one for around 4 years.

+1 but mine is 2.3 turbo petrol. Thankfully, the turbo in my one doesn't suffer the same fate as the diesel turbos.

The vast majority of first gen mazda 6's on the road are petrol engined models.

This is from memory, from something I read on the internet somewhere, so could be totally wrong, but I think they have some kind of system that's designed to send unburnt fuel to the DPF (I presume to help it regenerate), I think this is common enough in DPF engines. If the regeneration is aborted though Mazda had the clever idea of having the fuel run into the oil sump, causing very obvious problems.

That's because the vast majority of brand new 6's sold were petrol.

That seems to be not the case anymore.

On http://www.mazda.ie there is a car configurator, where you can select body type, engine, equipment, colour, etc and calculate the price.
Unfortunately there are only diesels available there.
It seems to be strange, as on every other mazda site from EU there are both petrol and diesel engines available.

Would that mean that Irish people stopped buying petrols at all?

The tax changes 3 years flipped the balance, emissions rather than engine size determine vrt so now petrol is less attractive.
Example: there used to be €5000 in the difference between a petrol and diesel Avensis in 2007.

Something being less attractive is one thing, but it looks like petrol mazda 6 are not available at all now.

You cannot buy a brand new petrol Mondeo either anymore. Simply there is zero demand for these models due to the lower price of the diesel models and motor tax disadvantage.

is the 6 not just a dressed up/down mondeo? I was asked to recover one with a siezed rear caliper the other day(utterly fried and almost welded to the disc) and it all looked very fordish in the oily department. presume ford have a chunk of mazda these days??

Where have you been the last 3.5 years? :)

To Irish people, motor tax is crucially important. Diesels score low on the CO2 scale compared to petrols, thus are cheaper to tax. Apart from the tiniest sh1tboxes, nearly everything is diesel now. I wouldn't be surprised if it is 80-85%. 4 years ago Subaru sold only petrol cars in Ireland. Now they only sell diesels.

I was aware about general tendency, but becuase I can't afford brand new car, I never really looked at what was available.
It was just once when I looked and new mazdas in Poland, and I wanted to compare prices with Ireland. I was just very surprised, that no petrols were available here, considering almost everywhere else there's plenty of petrol cars available.

So I have moved away from the mazda's and now I'm looking at this...
http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/2432562
Bar the motor tax would I be crazy???

Mondeo and 6 share some petrol engines but are build on different platforms.

Irish sheeple are into group think, even when the group is wrong they are right.

If you service it with the right oil it's fine. If you don't, it goes downhill very quickly.

The 6 does share some components, but is quite different. Mazda gave Ford their 1.8 for the later Mondeo's, after around 2003 I think because the Ford 1.8 was muck.
