    Hey,

I'm trying to download a template document uploaded by a lecturer, but when I do it opens in wordpad, and is completely incomprehensible. I can read it online. I've googled for help but can't find anything that matches my problem. I'm running Chrome and Windows Vista if that's any use to anybody.

    Thanks.

EDIT: Oh, and I've downloaded the compatibility pack from Microsoft.

What's the file extension on the template? Chances are it was meant for Microsoft Word.

Right click on the file>Open With>Choose default for this program and browse for Word, usually C:\Program Files[(x86) on 64 bit Windows)]\Microsoft Office\OFFICE[version_number]\WINWORD

It says .doc after it. It has the Word logo beside it too, and I can open it in Word on other computers. I have Word 2007, and have no problem with it when I create files on this computer, but it's all crazy when I try to import or download.

It won't allow me. I did as you suggested, but when I try to open the file then, one of those clanging error messages comes up, with a FileName.doc is not a valid Win32 application message.

Try repairing the Office install, from Googling looks like somethings got corrupted. A .doc file is not a executeable, so should not be identified as such. Also the compatibility pack is for Office versions 2003 and below, It only adds support for Microsofts .docx, .xlsx, .pptx etc formats in older versions, if you can attach the template here or PM a link I may be able help further
