Sky Ad in papers today says RTE available without subscription

If you look at the sky ad inserted in the newspapers today it clearly says right underneath the box which says "You also get all your favourite channels as standard" - Channels available without subscription. The channels listed are all the irish ones plus bbc1 bbc2 bbc3 bbc 4 cbbc cbeebies c4 more4 and e4.

Now we all know it is only the bbc ones that are available without a sub. Not like sky to make errors like this. Let's face it its not likely to happen I suppose!?!?

I wonder do they mean the channels are available without subscription, but not necessarily via Sky?

I'd say that's what they meant.

plus, you'll get your favourite UK and Irish
channels as standard and you'll have access to over 200 non-subscription channels.

I read that as ... as part of your subscription, you will get all these UK and Irish channels. And as well as that you will have access to over 200 FTA channels, which you can receive on our equipment, if you can be bothered to find out how to tune them in. I]They do not bother to explain that most of the channels are FTA anyway[/I

    Sneaky devils, eh?

How is this sneaky? The ad clearly states that they are available as part of your subscription, be it a full package or standard one.

Sneaky in that they would have people believe that they need a sub to get the fta channels. That perception suits them just fine.

But RTE et al aren't FTA or FTV

BBC channels, UTV, Ch 4, E4, More 4, Film 4, 5 ITV 1,2,3,4 etc are all definitely fta and all the +1s.
RTE is FTV on a NI card, maybe not on an Irish card though.
Many people believe that Sky is the only satellite broadcaster, and they love that perception.
Anyway, roll on Saorsat and hopefully it will be pushed hard for those that can't get Saorview, and Sky will hopefully lose customers for those that want Irish channels without the sub

It is? I was of the opinion that a subscription was needed to view RTÉ in Northern Ireland.

Maybe it is, I thought the ftv card from Sky carried RTE, but I must be wrong.
Wouldn't pay anything to Sky, at any time

rtetv is not free on skytv

I have saorview after a once off fee, I only pay the tv licence fee to receive the irish tv channels

RTE is free to air terrestrially via Saorview and Analogue, this is what Sky mean, the other channels are FTA on satellite. I have never had Chorus/UPC nor had my friends so I am not sure but I think I read once that RTE is fta on UPC MMDS also.

Nope, RTÉ is not FTV up here either. I have an NI FSFS card as well as an irish sub card, and with the 'Freesat from Sky' in the receiver RTÉ is not available.

It clearly isn't what Sky mean, the ad is for the Sky platform not Soarview etc. RTE isn't FTV either as the tv license goes towards it.

RTÉ isn't FTV anywhere. With your logic I suppose the BBC isn't actually FTA as the British pay a television license for them?

The TV licence doesn't pay cent toward availability on Sky.
RTE, TG4 & TV3 don't charge for the content. But all carriage, EPG, Encryption costs etc are Sky's.

Just like UPC cable. But without a cable.

Technically MMDS is not regarded as Public Broadcast, but Wireless Cable in Ireland. UPC may choose to not encrypt some channels on MMDS or wired cable. But there is ZERO FTA UPC. UPC is purely a PayTV service. If you watch Cable or MMDS then UPC are entitled to subscription. Watching UPC without a subscription is "theft of service".
