Toshiba Satelite Pro sound distorted

I have a 4year old Toshiba Satelite Pro A200. A great laptop, used extensively every day, but a few days back the sound suddenly started to give problems.

I have sound both on the inbuilt speakers and the earphones/external speakers but it is badly distorted and its impossible to listen to anything. Even if nothing's playing there's white noise on the speakers which only stops when I mute the sound.

I'm not too good at the IT part but I downloaded and re-installed the sound drivers from the Toshiba website, and also looked on their site for some solution to this problem, with no luck.

    I would appreciate any advice.

    Thanks

Does the problem persist even when the laptop is running on the battery?

Thanks for the reply - yes it is the same on battery.

Do you think its even worth trying to get this fixed or should I just upgrade. I recently had to replace the keyboard as well and dont really want to spend much more on a 4 year old laptop.

    Thanks

It looks like system board problem. Repair should cost around €70
