Taxing a Van for the first time

    Hi Guys,

Ive recently bought a 2003 Opel Combo Van. As this is my first van I am not sure about which way I can tax it so I have rang the local tax office to inquire. On the first phone call I got a girl and proceeded to ask her what my options were. She asked me what was I using the van for. I told her that the main reasons for me having a van were to do with my hobbies and college work. I use the van for transporting around large site models etc as part of my architecture course, Im also a keen competition angler and use the van to transport all of my fishing equipment and I also have hobbies including kayaking, kayak fishing and cliff jumping which I also need a lot of space for due to the nature of the hobbies.

The girl in the tax office said that if I was to collect a form off them and bring it up to the Garda Station and tell them the same thing that they would stamp it and I could get commercial tax. I then went into the tax office to collect the form and discussed it with the clerk on the desk as I had forgotten the name of the form after my telephone conversation with the girl. He then proceeded to tell me a different story and said that the girl was wrong to tell me this and that if I was to fill in the form that I would be filling it in incorrectly as I needed a business which paid tax to use the form. He said that if I was to do this that I would be committing fraud and if caught could be prosecuted. He said that if I didnt have a business which paid tax well then I couldnt fill out the form and that I would have to tax the van privately.

My question now is what are my options for taxing the van? From speaking to the clerk on the desk he seemed more sure about my options than the girl I spoke to on the phone and I feel if I ring up again I will get someone else on the phone in there telling me a different story again!

Just shooting straight from the hip here, as I don't know much about this area, but I'd imagine the answer is in the name - Commercial tax can hardly be available to someone not carrying out a commercial activity. You want to use the vehicle for purely private use, therefore it would appear only logical that you tax it as such... (Also I'd say you'll get a definitive answer to this query more easily over on the motoring forum...).

Thanks, Ive been looking into this for the past two weeks now. Seems private insurance is the way to go.
