Looks like a good budget buy. I'm looking for a cheap HD LCD, even if the picture quality isnt top notch its still better than an old Panasonic CRT right ?

The quality on these is actually excellent, I work in Xtravision and we have a good few of these on all the time in store, crystal clear picture on them when hooked up to a Blu-ray.

Think its the Hannspree SJ42DMBB. Priced at €429.99 but €60 off for 3 days (not sure when it started)

These are usually weekend offers, so presume at closing tomorrow (Sunday).

With a HDMI cable I'd say so ye.

    Just how reliable are these?
I had a Hannspree once (years ago) and swore I'd tear out my eyes rather than ever buy a product from them ever again, regardless of the price. The picture was quite good- but the sound was appalling- and eventually, exactly 1 day after the end of the warranty period (and despite the fact that I'd gotten 3 replacements) failed completely. The sound still worked from the headphone jack thankfully- so I used that to drive a separate amp.

It is good value- but just how reliable are Hannspree these days?

If you miss the offer there is always

    http://www.misco.ie/Product/168105/Hannspree-SJ42DMBB-42inch-Freeview-Full-HD-TV

    for €380

This set is not Saorview Approved I understand ... but seems good value at that price.

    EDIT:
Should have mentioned the spec list has "MHEG5 yes" so it 'should' be future proof for services to be introduced.

CRT > LCD for picture quality on non HD sources

I got the 25" version of this for €229.99 yesterday for a computer monitor for college. It's great! Well, moving from a 21" CRT that I have been using for 10 years it is :D

The guys at work gave me a €100 Xtravision voucher when I was leaving on Friday :pac:

There's also an older version without freeview/saorview for €179.99. Missing a few other specs also.

The picture quality wasnt great, but it was mostly down to the speakers, which were terrible, my mobile phone has better audio quality. And it literally fell apart. sockets got loose, so you'd have got wiggle the HDMI cable around until it worked. One day it just wouldn't turn on. It was still under warranty, so I got it fixed, but then it happened again out of warranty.

I got this Friday. Was on all day yesterday for various stuff (TV/PS3/BluRay Player) and it is great. Perfect picture on HDMI and tbh nothing wrong with the sound that I noticed anyway. However, I got charged 379.99 in Xtravision for it for some reason. Why the extra tenner does anyone know??

Really ? Is there a big difference ? Will still look relativly close to the CRT picture on normal channels though right ? And then HD will be another level ?

I see a lot of people asking about Saorview on these tv's.

I presumed that most people are on Sky or UPC these days.

    I guess I'm wrong :)

to me, from the back and the side it looks like the chassis of my lg 323000,
to glitch in mine is the sound, the speakers are at the bottom, and the sound on this has no comparison to my old 27in walker.

Do not buy these, I had one and it had to go to England twice to be fixed and then came back and died, we put it in the bin.

Just save up an extra bit and get a good brand name, save you hassle in long run

It tunes both Analogue and digital RTE channels, and has MHEG5.

The auto tune put the digital TV channels starting at 1; the digital radio channels starting at 200 and the Analogue channels starting at 900.
They are editable by the user.

I am impressed with the picture.

I am impressed with the picture.

Me too, but now looking for some sound system for that - default speakers are out of any range...

I am not sure about the sound .... it is not great, but the location of the speakers and the manner in which my TV is enclosed is not helping at all.
I may just attach a set of powered PC speakers (with sub-woofer) -- a an old Altec Lansing set I have laying about -- which I suspect will overcome the problem for me. Much easier do than try to find another location for the TV ;)

Wouldn't fill me with confidence tbh.

Why don't I just pick up a TV from the chipper? :D

Got a 32" version about two weeks ago, and the sound is poxy. Seems to be a problem with them. Part of you get what you pay for, maybe. I did exactly what you're thinking of doing, and it's made all the difference. As far a reliability goes, well time will tell.

Tesco have an LG LCD 42" for €399 at the moment - are LG good???

Its the 42LD450 model - anyone know anything about them???

LG supplied Apple with the LCD panels for the iPad 2- which should be a reasonable idea of how reliable the panel is.

If you check cnet for reviews such as here you'll see they are considered to be up there with Samsung quality wise.

No idea what the sound on them is like- but they do seem to be getting almost universally good reviews......

    Thanks!

This only is 50Mhz - would that make a massive amount of difference?

I went into the menu today and adjusted some of the setting for the sound ..... quite a lot of them there ...... and without adding any speakers it has improved immensely.

There are settings to boost and cut the sound at various frequencies, so with a bit of twiddling I overcame a lot of the problems with the siting of mine.

Yes .... time will tell about the reliability ..... but for the price I am not expecting to get the same as a device which is two or three times what I paid ;) (well actually didn't pay -- got a birthday pressie from the "kids" :D )

    regards.

Glad to know things worked out for you. I tried all those settings too, and while it did improve, the PC speakers had a much better sound for me.

Its actually 60Hz- and this particular model gets a 7 out of 10 review from zdnet

Its a budget set- and not on par with regular sets feature wise, but not far off.

    Seems like remarkable value.

Bought one in March. Can't fault it, apart from having only one scart connection and 2 HDMI ports. You can change the software on it to let it play divx, but I haven't done that as I have the PC connected to it, and play through that.

    See reviews here

Btw, at that price, it's good value. I paid €530 for it

I will likely add the speakers .... but now it is not an immediate necessity.
I have no doubt they would improve things much more.

Also great to hear that it will probably be successful ... thanks.
