Cnoc an Óir TX site

Here's one for the anoraks! :D

Last Monday I took a spin up to the top of Cnoc an Óir/Knockanore to take a look at the gear up there. With thanks to my friend Michael for getting me up there in the first place!

To be honest I didn't really know what I was looking at, though I do know most of what's up there. Saorview, RTÉ radio (89.2, 91.4, 93.6, 98.8), Radio Kerry (97.6), Today FM (101.0), UPC MMDS, Permanet broadband and all four mobile operators. I certainly saw evidence of O2 and 3 up there. I might leave it to the experts to tell me what is what! :)

I believe that this one is the MMDS site:

This one had a planning application by O2 Ireland on the fence, though I see what I believe are vertically polarised VHF aerials near the base:

And some general views from the top. On this day it was possible to see the Castlemungret cement factory outside Limerick city. The view is amazing, these photos do not do it justice.

    Nice photos!

The fourth photo is a phone mast alright:
GSM 900MHz panels at the very top (long and thin)
3G 2100MHz panels directly underneath, on the left (small, rectangular)
The various dishes are backhaul radio links to other cell sites

Also looks like those VHF antennae could be FM radio?

At a guess (open to corrections!) the first photo is an MMDS tower - the large dishes link to other MMDS sites as UPC MMDS network is primarily radio link, not fibre. Looks like there is also phone operator and possibly broadband on that too.

    Second is FM radio.

    Third is RTÉ.

I suspected the one with the VHF aerials was the Radio Kerry TX, there's a microwave antenna pointing towards Knockmoyle, though it's hard to see in the photo. I was just afraid to say so for fear of being wrong, haha. But it could also be the second photo if you said that's FM, apparently it's been there a long time. Today FM was relatively new to this site, having only come live around 2008 or so, not sure where it is.

The first tower has cells for 3 on it alright, there's a power cabinet at ground level with Hutchison Ireland stamped on it.

I know is UPC MMDS and also transmits Radio Kerry at 97.6MHz (you can see two FM dipoles on the left side of the mast)

This one hosts RTE FM radio again two dipoles on left side of mast:

BTW There was once a (shortlived it seems) TV 'deflector' there as well. I recall in summer 1988 on a visit to Ballybunion and discovering BBC TV from Northern Ireland (and I assume UTV and probably C4 ?) was available there, UHF TV aerials were to be seen aimed at that nearby mountain. This deflector was no longer on air maybe a year later on another visit! I assume it was relaying another deflector in Co. Clare I would speculate.

Karsini, where you looking for the UHF TVA panels ?

    They look like this.

    Kippure
    kippure1.jpg

Thats Kippures Elti antenna system which is made up of 8 bays x 3 directions wide band UHF TVA 31/50 antenna panels working 470–860 MHz.

    Kilduff
    kilduff1.jpg
8 bays x 4 directions wide band UHF TVA 31/50 antenna panels

More excellent anorak photos here mainly of RTE's AM site in Athlone.

    Hi guys,

    Just saw this now.

1st photo - Eircom, Vodafone and Hutchinson (3 Ireland)
    2nd photo - Coast Guard/Dept. of Marine
3rd photo - UPC (MMDS), Radio Kerry and Permanet
4th photo - 02 and RTE TV & Radio (DTT panels at top, just below mobile sectors )

The DTT panels are facing Listowel, Ballybunion and back across the water into Clare.

This is a repeater site for RTE and is not link fed.

I was actually expecting a cylindrical structure for UHF rather than the panels as I had seen this on some sites such as the Listowel UHF relay.

Thanks for the posts, nice to get an idea of what's what. When it comes to broadcasting I know a fair bit of theory but not much hands on experience.
