Tipped Over The Edge of Reason

Right, I'm so sick of this shít it's not even funny anymore!

I drive a (aesthetically) modified car. Fantastic you say. Get to the point.

Ever since I've started driving it, the amount of abuse I've received because of it is unreal. People think they can walk all over us, just because of the whole "boy racer" image.

Goddammit, would some people wake up. 99% of us modified car enthusiasts try to distance ourselves as much as possible from those twats that drive around pulling handbrake turns, blowing red lights, racing cops and other general law breaking!

Yesterday, for example, I was travelling from Midleton in Co. Cork to Mahon Point. Anyone who knows the road, also knows its chaotic on a Friday.

    Where do I begin?

VW Passat in outside lane decides he suddenly wants to go to Cóbh. Doesn't wait until Little Island to turn around, he just swings across the inside lane into the slip road. In rush hour traffic. How nobody died is a miracle of all miracles.

Approaching the tunnel, queue is a bit long, so I wait patiently until the lane divides. Spastic behind me decides he's too cool for queues and swings out, magically forgetting that to do so means he has to re-enter the slow lane, where people are driving at 100 k/ph. God bless the silver Corolla for being quick with their reaction, or it was a one way journey to the graveyard for both drivers.

    Eventually get to the other side of the tunnel. Middle aged female in a Auris thinking she's the queen rips past at 120 k/ph. If I did that;

    a) she'd call the cops
    b) the cops would be on the Mahon Point flyover already and nab me
    c) every tom dick and harry would eff and blind me and call me a boy racer

From now on if I have a bad experience to share either here or in the R&R motoring thread I'm going to call them

    civillian racers

and to top it all off, on the way home, eastbound on the dual carriageway just after the Cóbh flyover, a truck decided to get angry with me. I overtook him and then pull in to the inside lane. He speeds up and stays beside me in the outside lane. By God was I shítting a brick because he kept swerving noticeably in my direction. He's lucky I didn't call the cops on him. The cúnt.

Anyway just thought I'd share my experiences folks. Any questions on above, fire away!

So what's new? Drive defensively, and try not to let it get to you so much.;)

Thats an awful lot of accidents that happened around you in a short space of time. Maybe the aesthetics of your modified car were distracting people.:D

IN relation to the truck, if I overtook him and suddenly found that he was acting the p***k by speeding up and boxing me in, I would be out of there quickly by whatever means required as you do not want to be hanging around too close to a large rig for any amount of time. Even with the best of intentions, there are blind spots etc and in any emergency situation, you can get wiped out in the blink of an eye.

What's the car out of interest?

You guys do get an awful lot of unwarranted abuse but none of the incidents you highlighted here have anything to do with your modified car IMO.

What they do highlight is the appalling standard of driving on Irish roads that the guards in general have absolutely no interest in dealing with.

Definitely agree with the comment on the artic as well, get the hell out of dodge asap!

nothing its to do with the fact that it's ok for "civillian racers" to do as they please and tear up the roads however they feel fit, but I'm not because I'm a "boy racer" ;)

Hes trying to say if he had done them the garda would be all over him,I agree with that as I see german cars mostly bmw's and audi's tear uo the m50 and rarely get pulled over.

The modifications and boy racer aspects must be too subtle for me.

just going to say that on a similar journey in and around dublin/galway/belfast very similar incidents would happen nothing new to be honest OP sorry.

Nothing in the OP indicates anything to do with the OP's car. Paranoia , eh?

I'm going to assume you posted the wrong pics, as there's nothing aesthetic, modified or anything that screams 'enthusiast' about that Astra.

    I know you did! :D

I would take off those skirts and put back on the original bubmpers front and rear if you still have them. Belt of cloloured polish and some wheel covers she would look nice again. ;)

if ya look above, i said that I got the car that way. Had to scrap the 17" rims as they were after being welded so many times by the previous owner.

I used to drive a Fabia, way better car tbf.

Just a wild guess here, but I'd imagine you're being mistaken for a boy racer because you're driving a car that only a boy racer could have "modified", so it's hardly a surprise..

de-skobe the car and you'll be grand.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,518 ✭✭✭✭dudara

TBH, I wouldn't consider that to be a 'special' car and it wouldn't catch my attention on the road. I think you may be reading too much into it.

As for the incidents, I pretty much experience the same things on the M50 and around Dublin every day. Last Wednesday, I had two drivers cut in on me near the M1 exit off the M50 - both in the space of a minute. No sooner than I had braked and moved to avoid the first, there was another one. (Last minute lane divers!). Gave me a bit of a fright, even by normal standards.

@all - this thread isn't for "constructive criticism" of the OP's car, thanks

    OP

I haven't looked at your pictures of your car nor do I care to...I really am scratching my head trying to determine what your point is in this thread though...I see crap/dangerous/inconsiderate etc etc etc drivers every day...a crap etc driver is a crap etc driver..."crap etc" driving includes doing doughnuts in the middle of the road at 3am in the morning, changing lanes without indicating, breaking lights, speeding, tailgating, hogging the over-taking lane, choosing the incorrect lane approaching a roundabout etc etc...we all know that there are "crap etc" drivers out there..

Sorry to hear about your troubles, OP, but don't worry, it happens to all of us.
There are plenty of rep-man-mobiles, mammy-wagons, white-vansters and, of course, self-appointed "road warriors" (mostly guys in their 50's, fat, bald and with scarlet faces, who believe it is their job to enforce speed limits by driving demonstrably slow in the "fasht" lane and "punishing" other drivers who they feel have done wrong by flashing and beeping whilst tailgating) out there.
Your car would not really stand out as especially outrageous, but keep at it.
    How's this for outlandish?;)

    can't see the pic man.

The only reason I bought the car in first place was I intended to use it as a project. Unfortunately work dried up, so I'm lumped with a piece of shít, and I can't do anything with it.:(

OP You are just typical of your "age group".

You feel victimised because you feel you are part of an misunderstand part of society.

You bought the car and bought the image that goes with it. When you change your car you will also buy the stereotype that goes with that car as well.

I.e BMW Driver, Audi Driver, Nissan Micra Driver, People Carrier Driver.

You will be treated differently because you are short, tall, thin fat, being over 30, over 40, 21 or 18 and younger.

I don't want to say boo-hoo to you but your car is exactly what it is, a boy racer looking mobile. When you finally comes to terms with that you will be happier. Age will bring you maturity and you will understand this post soon.

Hey OP man, just take a big chill pill, lay back in your seat, put the elbow on the armrest, put on some soothing tunes, (Bob Marley is goooood) and just cruise it. The driving madness around you will never ever change no matter what you do or drive, so just get used to it, and let them rush on by, they will get there no quicker, and you'll save a fortune on fuel too.
