Bus transfers Galway to Athenry by Corporate Communications

Iarnród Éireann is investigating an incident on the 15.05 Galway to Heuston service today.

As the train was approaching Athenry, the driver was alerted by the train’s automated system of a fire in the undercarriage area of one carriage on the 6-carriage Intercity railcar train.

While this fire was not affecting the passenger area, the driver took the precaution of moving people from the carriage in question (third carriage) to the rear of the train, and is detraining the passengers who were on board on to the line at Costello’s Bridge, approximately 1.5 miles from Athenry.

The fire services were called and are attending the scene.

The passengers will be transferred by road to Athenry to continue their journey by rail to Dublin.

Services will operate with a bus transfer between Athenry and Galway until the train has been cleared from the line.

Iarnród Éireann has also reported the incident to the Rail Accident Investigation Unit.

We apologise for the inconvenience caused to passengers.

Normal service will resume this morning.
