Couldn't really be bothered to vote in the poll as I don't see any of them worthy of a vote and I've only ever seen Day-Lewis films from the 90's. And only ever saw Clooney in From Dusk Till Dawn, Three Kings and The Peacekeeper. (and ER as well :o ).

Imo best actor from the 00s would be either DiCaprio or Mark Wahlberg. Ed Norton is up there as well but I would like to see him in more stuff.

I said it here before a while ago that if Keifer Sutherland was in more box office films he would have picked himself up many an oscar.

poll lacks DiCaprio, should have won for The Aviator

Ignoring the people on the poll, I'd go for Di Caprio or Christain Bale.

Not your cup of tea ?

If you've ever seen The Departed, Shooter, The Italian Job, Four Brother's and Max Payne you'll see why my opinion is of such.

No need, just make your request in this thread and a Mod might add more.

Lol, silly poll. No Di Caprio or Matt Damon.

..but was Dicaprio nominated twice for best male actor between 2000-2010?, By the way I agree, that the best actors don't win!

    EDIT: opps misread

It doesn't matter really he still regarded as one of the best. The way I look at him as being the newer De Niro, who actually got his career on the road. :)

I'm afraid I wouldn't rate any of those performances as anywhere near good enough to warrant a place on a list of best actors.

He's mediocre at best and terribly wooden at worst (see Fear, The Happening, Max Payne, Rock Star, Planet of the Apes etc.)

The only films he was half decent in were Boogie Nights, The Perfect Storm and The Fighter and even then, he was outclassed by the supporting cast.

sxt, do not create any more of these threads. I’ve just deleted two of them and I’m seriously considering locking this one. Edit the existing thread or report the post so that a mod can do it for you. Don’t keep creating the same thread over and over.

I was going to post a new "best male actor thread 2000 -2010 thread" to include javier bardem , leo di caprio, johnny depp, and russel crowe added, and was going to leave it at that... A few people were rightly calling for Leo di caprio to be included..They are the only multiple oscar nominees to my knowledge...

Can you add these people to the thread going?

    Thanks!"

Why do you even need a poll? I'm sure many people will prefer actors who won't be able to fit on a restricted poll or weren't regularly nominated in a Hollywood circlejerk. All a bit pointless, really.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,962 ✭✭✭✭dark crystal

Man, you can hardly post anything in this forum other than something about a particlular film without being moderated!

    No lists, no polls...

    You guys are harsh here!!

Nothing against polls. This is the third attempt at the same thread though, and I really don't see the point in the poll :)

I agree that the best actors would be more often than not from non oscar nominated films. But the Oscars are the most commerical and recognised film award ceremony . Whether liked or not, the majority public will judge actors by the "Oscars". However you won't get many better acting performances than Daniel Day lewis in'Gangs of New York , and 'there will be blood". That is a good thing about this poll, is that people agree with this

I've added them, but I echo johnny_ultimate's sentiments. Having a poll for this is pointless.

The poll is for multiple Oscar nominations

Well Philip Seymour Hoffman deserves a place there for sure, he has three and is one of the best actors around

Yet gets left off the poll for actors who has less nominations?

Sure things get overlooked, I guess that's what happened

It was said that Brando was the greatest screen actor ever with Olivier being perhaps the greatest stage actor. For me, Day-Lewis is right up there with those two.

the obvious answer isnt even on the list

    philip seymour hoffman

Surprised to see Sean Penn not picking up any votes yet. He would be my second choice after Daniel Day Lewis.

    A wonderful actor.

I've seen Departed and Shooter. Stayed away from Max Payne because of the stinker reviews but Walhberg was very ordinary in both of them. And when he does get off his arse to act he hams it up pretty bad. He's pretty good at looking bewildered and gobsmacked and not much else.

I voted for DDL. What's the big deal with Philip Seymour Hoffman anyway? I've seen him in Capote and I know he's an actor with impressive range but other than that one film I've never really been impressed with him.

WOW no votes for crowe, ive seen 10 of his films the last 10 years and only disliked 1 (robin hood), i havent seen proof of life, master and commander and tenderness,

i gave him my vote for shear consistency, he should have at least a 2nd oscar for a beautiful mind, if not a third for cinderella man (TBF i havent seen capote so i cant judge, just thought he was great in CM)

i thought di caprio would have had a stronger decade, he started it off strong with the beach, gangs of new york and catch me if you can, a nice mix of caracters, but then came the departed, blood diamond and body of lies which personally i thought were poor, last years shutter island was poor also, inception was a good film but i think di caprio was diluted to much with the rest of the great cast of that film, he just didnt seem like the central caracter,

daniel day lewis as great but he is just wasnt around as much as he should have been, i just dont think he deserves the votes he getting, hes had 4 films in the last 10 year, 2 of which were great films, but again crowe has films where his perfomances were just as good and of his 13 films in the same period hes had at least 2 performances that i would say equal lewis and probably another 2 that were fairly up there, and while some of his stuff wasnt exceptional it was still pretty good,

will smith could have done a lot more the last decade also, he almost seemed no existant for years, poping up randomly with some fairly average perfromaces, he hasnt made a film in 3 years and all that is on his schedule at the moment is MIB 3, which i think is pathetic for an actor like him, after the failure of hancock youd think hed try to redeem himself sooner rather than later,

goerge clooney i think is a hugh hit and miss actor, he went from the perfect storm to spykids, then onto oceans 11 which he then follwed up with welcome to collinwood, TBF though i havent seen all of his films the last decade 10/21 and i liked 6 of those 10, i thought burn after reading was a shocking film as was the men who stare at goats, but the perfect storm and the american were great films and very enjoyable to watch, as were oceans 11 and 13, i look forward to some of his films cause i do like him as an actor but i have come to not expect great things from him at this stage,

im not a big depp fan, POTC 1 and 2 were fun, and public enimies was a good film, other than that i didnt notice much from depp that was any good the last decade,

jeff bridges i didnt even notice him till 2008 and then he had a string of successfull films 4 of 5 i saw which i thought were good but noting special, bar crazy heart,

sean penn had a rather good decade now looking back at it, a bit sparse but not as sparse as day lewis, 12 films of which i saw 3 and all of which he was great in, but again he seems like will smith poping up here and there,

i didnt see a single colin firth film in the 00s and ive seen bardem in 1 or 2 films didnt see anything special about him,

so all in all i think crowe has the best decade of all the actors in that poll,

also your probably missing ralph fiennes, tom hanks, brad pitt, denzel washington, mel gibson, clint eastwood, morgan freeman, michael caine, philip seymore hoffman, matt damon, adrien brody, joaquin phoenix, all of which have had at least one great perfromance in the 00s,

not saying id vote for any of them, just think they deserved a mention,

I disagree about DiCaprio. I think his filmography has been incredibly consistent. I honestly don't think he's made a single bad film in the last decade. Films that didn't work as well as they should have, sure, but I can't fault his choice of projects and collaborators. They were all interesting films that were well worth seeing.

Crowe on the other hand has signed on to too many half-arsed scripts. DiCaprio seems to have a far higher standard than him. He never would have signed onto something like Robin Hood or A Good Year. Nolan had to do quite a bit of re-writing to get him to agree to Inception.

i think it was more the martin scorsese collaborations that i most disliked about his films, i loved gangs of new york it was a great film, but i thought the departed and shutter island would have worked just as well without him, i went into both expecting a much higher standard of film, and walked out very disappointed,

i know a lot of people would disagree, but i just dont think dicaprio and scorsese are that great a team as there made out to be, the departed was a mess, there were to many big names trying to get screen time that it just didnt work, and shutter island was pathetic, i expected a much better effort than that from the two of them, i guessed what was up 20 mins into the film but said to myself this is dicaprio and scorsese theres no way theyll play out such a stupid story, and bang di caprio was
    a patient

i agree that robin hood was a terrible film, and i do think crowe should stop working woth scott, but i thought a good year as a fairly ok film, it was was it was, a light hearted romcom, it was never made out to be anything but, body if lies was here and there, i havent seen it in so long i cant really remember it, i remember not really liking it that much, but i hate most films set in the middle east, its the scenery automatically puts me off, and i dont give a sh1t whats going on out there, so please stop trying to ram it down my throat, but at the same time i like a bit of spy action to, maybe if it was set in a civilised country i would have liked it more,

If the Insider was in the 2000's it might tip the balance to Crowe, that was a fantastic performance, but to be honest DDL's performance in There Will Be Blood is one of the best acting performances ever. Totally outstanding. MarK Wahlberg isn;t fit clean DDL's boots in terms of acting quality. Leo is getting there, but he's not there yet!

99:o, for me crowes performance in a beautiful mind is so hard to see past that i couldnt vote for anyone else, and having gladiator, cinderella man and state of play helped out also:D

Lets set one thing straight here. Di Caprio SUCKED DONKEY BALLS in Gangs of New York. In fact I'd say he ruined that film...which given the astonishing performance of DDL and the ever solid Brendan Gleeson is really saying something.

Brendan Gleeson actually I feel is worth a tip of the hat in this thread. Yes he's not quite the A lister those in the poll above are, but he's racked up solid performance after solid performance and I would say is quite brilliant in The Guard
