Have you read the latest tax proposal.

A new household electrial tax/charge for having a PC in your house,as alot of people are now watching TV via the internet.

I mean FFS,whe is enough enough, with this country and Fine Gael??????

I'd say that won't be too far away at all. There are a lot of people in the country (and that number will only rise) who don't have to pay the licence cos they watch everything online. The way things are, I'm never again letting a TV inside the house. €160 for three channels is a bit ridiculous.

tv licence man called to my father the other day.hes retired and in his early 70s. inspector guy asks him has he got a tv licence.the father said yes. you should know that . its paid in full every year.(my fathers old stock.if he got a bill on monday,it would be paid that monday)
tv inspector guy tells him he needs 2. the father agrees (just because the inspector says so) and calls me about 2 hours later after thinking about what inspector said to him (poor man. thought he was a major criminal) ..............now the mother wasnt to well a few years(approx 10 years) back and i converted the gagage thats connected to the side of the house into a "granny flat" (had planning permission).so the mother had her independence.(she is fine now, thank god). however the father uses the room to watch the telly (he loves his horse racing) .
to cut along story short . i called to find out why he needed 2 licences.i was told because there was no access to the main building internally.

tv licence tax...its a money racket.......
any way . sent the lads in this morning to make a door between house and granny flat TO MEET THEIR REQUIREMENTS.
PROBABLY PUT A TAX ON THAT NOW.

    Im telling you all now.

INSULATE the fcuk out of your house now, before we get another bad winter,

Insulation is the key to a warm and effiecent house.

More insulation and a more airtight house means less gas used in the long run.

    Trust me.

I know where you are comming from.

I can show you alot of pics of insulation work and solar panel work that I had done on my house. Some people told me and insisted that this wouldnt work or that wouldnt work and I was wasting my money and being led along by a sales pitch, and none of the stuff doesnt do what its supposed to do,when the truth is that all my work and the 1 or 2 gambles I took have worked, and worked very well indeed.

All the work has brought the house from an E2 to an A3 BER rating.House is toasty warm now.

As the phrase goes..........short term pain for long term gain.;):D

never trust a man who says trust me :)

if you have an airtight house , you can't use gas hob or cooker (room sealed boiler ok)
you need adequate PERMANANT ventilation .trust me on that one
(and mechanical air changers are not allowed in case they fail electrically)

When I said airtight I meant and refering to the likes of draughty windows and doors, cold kitchens and draughty rooms.Cold external walls that in turn make the house feel cold on the inside,holes/gaps in walls that are not propperly sealed back up.

All these little things do add up to make a hose very cold and costly to heat and keep warm.

I encountered all these problems (and then some) and have had 1st hand experience of turning my house around from a grotty old house to a modern and effiecent/cosy place to live.

But yes you are right to mention what you have mentioned, mechanical vents are a must for safety reasons. As in a physical hole in the wall for a permanant air vent/feed.

Insulation is very important. Our detatched 50's property was derelict and empty for 30 years. I spent 16 months renovating it and building a 40sqm extension and a garage.

It had no drainage or water connection and the electricity was disconnected so a whole new installation. You could just walk into the place.

I had a standard 4 inch cavity on the new extension with 75mm aeroboard platinum. I also slabbed the inside with kingspan slabs. On the old solid block walls I lined them with 50mm kingspan insulated plasterboard. I did every wall in the house and then got it plastered. 3 of the floors are new suspended timber floors and have 6 inches of insulation. Its made a great job to the house.

We heat the hot water and rads with an 8kw stove with backboiler. Villager berkley integral. In the cold spell the rooms were all 20-22 degrees:D We have no other boiler just the stove. The fuel cost us 750 euro last winter. Lit from September to April, burning 13 hours a day.
We have a living room (extension), kitchen/breakfast room. (used to be the original living room and another room, knocked them into one) 2 bedrooms, hall and showeroom.

We have between 8-16inches of loft insulation but I think it could do with adding to to get it 16 inches all over. (Knauf recycled bottles) I think we loose a bit of heat and could do with another 10 rolls to add to the 20 rolls.
If I was renovating the bungalow again I would of used 50mm kingspan slabs on every ceiling as well:)

I have no idea what the ber rating would be because our solicitor said it was pointless to have the vendors carry out a ber as we all know it would be awfull:eek: You can't have enough insulation, but in our case as it was internal we didnt want it too thick.

    Stove Fan:).

All these increases will just push people further into the black economy. I started out on my own 20 months ago and I am coming up against these unregistered unemployed plumbers more and more beating me on price because they are charging very little for work and doing it after they collect there dole. Don't know how long I can keep going:(. I have a few installations that will do me up till November but after that is anyone's guess. Loosing faith my friends:o

The powers that be in The UK are going after gas fitters and plumbers for working for cash, they have arrested 6 so far and warning 100s of others that their on the things to do list, it maybe the tax man that cleans out the cowboys from the industry much to the shame of RGI.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 870 ✭✭✭knighted_1

i believe, but this is second hand news and unconfirmed ,that rgi told the training centers to stop training all the lay people ,too many people qualified now -maybe someone has been told or heard similar ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,305 ✭✭✭yoshytoshy

Maybe we should open up a new taxi sign company and put the RGI logo along side the taxi number.

The closest thing I have heard is revenue going after merchants large cash sale transactions. The merchant will have to take details of the transaction i.e. name address and so on. They will follow up with a house call to see who done the work. Dont know how trough this is though, them auld Chinees wispers.

Boilers and other large items should be account only sales ,that would get rid of a lot of the cowboys.

Paying for a large item by cash doesnt make the person whos buying or everyone a cowboy though.

    Thats just stereotyping.

Well this is the thing. If that is the answer then they will get RGII involved and fine the home owner. As I said Chinees Whispers.
Dont know who they will get if it's a bathroom install :D

Going back 10 years CORGI in the UK tried making it illegal to sell parts specifically for gas illegal, didn`t work as the large retailers refused.

He is a expert as is I:eek: and I would agree with his findings based on working in the industry and having a insight into how my boiler are paid for(manufactures tech) and the quality of the installation.

You cant tarnish every trades person with the 1 brush, which is exactly what is being done here by both of you.

Yes,theres allways a few bad apples,no matter what the situation is.

But to make out and publicly state that everyone who pays for a product with cash or who doesnt use an account is a bad trades person or a cowboy is just not right or fair to do so.

I'm a gas fitter posting in a gas related thread ,so I'm talking about gas boilers here.
Boilers around 1k and not a lot of people walk around with that in their pocket.
Rolls of cable and lenghts of copper are not what I was talking about here.

I'm going out day after day trying to put to bed problems caused by cowboys there is nothing being done to safe guard consumers against cowboys, I don't think any installer would be upset if things were made more difficult whatever form it took, if it made it even more difficult for cowboys.

You clearly stated and posted that only reputable people pay with an account, so therefore that says anyone who buys a large item with cash or non account method is a cowboy.

How do you know that everyone who pays with cash is a cowboy???

You dont,so you have no right to taint everybody with the same brush.
