Russia v Ireland Tuesday 6th September

If we can win on Tuesday we will be in control of the Group. a point ahead of Russia and level probably with Slovakia (assuming they beat Armenia). Slovakia still have to face Russia at home. I'm as angry as everyone at what we saw tonight. Hopefully the reaction from media and fans will give the kick up the backside that is needed for the team. In a strange way I am actually more confident now against Russia then I was earlier. Or maybe we will just get trashed. Who knows. But we could be out of this competition by Wednesday - that is how important the game is now.

What do you think? Is there any hope based on what we say tonight?

Is Arshavin playing? You will probably win if he does.

I'll have to check my diary, I'm not sure I'll be able to watch tbh.

Trap said he made a mistake playing 4-4-2 last time. Has he learnt from from it?

So we win this game and we basically top the group and get automatic qualification. :pac:

Crazy as it sounds after that dross performance, yes.:D

Until in typical Irish fashion we blow it in the last minute at home to Armenia, of course.

Pretty much. Armenia at home and Andorra away after it. Hopefully they should treat it like the France game.

Hopefully Trap will put his stubbornness to one side, drop one of the strikers and play a central midfielder.

What I can see actually happening is, he'll stick with 4-4-2, then we'll get sliced open repeatedly and hammered. Trap will bring on Andy Keogh to save the day when we're 3-0 down after an hour. :pac:

And praise Whelan/Andrews for holding the midfield so well, and only conceding 3 goals.

I'll be at work. I'll be keeping a close eye on this though. :)

    Come on Ireland!

Asked after the game can we win in Russia Trap said...

"I am confident if we play in Moscow like we did this evening," he said.

"We have this game (in Moscow). We can win it. Why not?"

    Trapattoni - quoted by RTE.....:pac::D:(:mad::eek:

    :eek::eek::eek::eek:

Why not indeed? Why not!? What was so bad about tonight's performance? There is method in the madness.

Oh God, I hope they tear into Russia on Tuesday. Come on lads, positivity! One night can change it all. Come on Ireland!

Dont mind this talk of going all out for a win.

Just park the bus and take a point and we will be in good shape considering the incredibly bad performances tonight and home to Russia.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,259 ✭✭✭TheRedDevil10

we are plain and simply not good enough to beat Russia

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,950 ✭✭✭Pinturicchio

We absolutely have to go with a third man in midfield.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,055 ✭✭✭WallyGUFC

Could be an absolute hammering tbh, especially if they stay 442. If they lose it's over basically so sack Trap and get someone young and new in for the last 2 games. We're too negative and just not good enough to win in Moscow imo.

I wish I'd seen Russia play today to boost my confidence, as it apparently wasn't too good.

I can see us playing significantly better than we did today, but ultimately coming back with a 1-0 defeat to make for a sticky final two games.

At least we're not San Marino.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 593 ✭✭✭AnamGlas

Live on RTE @ 3.30pm, highlights @ 10.30pm, if my eyes didn't fail me earlier.

    Hoping for the best

I watched it, they made very heavy weather of getting by Macedonia indeed. Even the goal had a stroke of fortune about it. It gives one hope. Another thing - one of the main reasons I think we do so well in away matches imo, is the opposition are more obliged to attack and hence McGeady gets a lot more space to use his pace to run at defences.

Aye, we'll probably get hammered, but I wouldn't watch if I 100% believed we'd lose.

A team that can go to Italy and get something, go to Paris and win in normal time, and defeat a decent Italian team on neutral soil is well capable of beating this Russia team which is not as good as the above.

The performance against Slovakia was very poor but people forget many of our performances in the last campaign were also poor. I recall Bulgaria with Stiliyan Petrov bossing us both home and away in terms of possession and all round play and yet we survived it.

I reckon Ireland to edge this game by a goal.

Maybe if Duff would kick the ball towards the goal instead of back down his side we would have won

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,825 ✭✭✭Mikeyt086

I think Ireland will line up like this:

    Given

    O'Shea-Dunne-St.Ledger-Ward

    Duff
    McGeady

    Keane-Doyle

Come on you boys in green... Please?

3.30pm, on a Tuesday? That seems strange.

Moscow is 3 (maybe even 4) hours ahead of us. I think 5pm (our time) is standard for their Champions League matches so 4PM kickoff next Tuesday is fairly consistent.

Don't rule out Armenia getting something in Zilina, they mauled Slovakia last time out. They've been our guardian angels in this group. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,954 ✭✭✭LeeroyJones

I'd expect Armenia to take a point from the Slovakia match. Armenia are the topscorers of the group and Slovakia have been rubbish in front of goal so far - 6 goals in 7 matches including their two fixtures against Andorra is diabolical.

The trouble there is that if Armenia get a result they have a real chance which is a further speedbump for us come the final day which most people wouldn't have thought of a few months back. They would then go into their next game at home to a Macedonian side with nothing to play for so should get a win and then they travel to Dublin with it all to play for.

Having said that. I would be happy to face Armenia still in with a shot if it meant Slovakia were taken out of the equation!

Why that attitude? Go for them and just attack them. Have a positive attitude. Do that and win or come 2nd and probably get beat over two legs. Sometimes you have to just go for it.

    Given

    Foley - O'Shea - Dunne - Ward

    Duff - Hunt - Andrews - McGeady

    Keane - Long

is what I'd like to see.

Ireland were wasteful in front of goal tonight, and Macedonia could have had at least one in Moscow. If we just start looking for the pass in the middle of the park, we'll be flying. We might not win, but a draw will do fine for second, particularly if Armenia get something in Slovakia. That said, the last thing I want is for Armenia to still be in with a shout for the last double header.

Won't be able to watch this live due to work and I have to say I'm not even disappointed. Tonight was a shambles. I would be happy with the kind of football we played tonight when playing away from home but that kind of mediocrity going forward which we displayed tonight is inexcusable.

    Sincerely,
    A disgruntled Irish fan.

On the back of the woeful performance against Slovakia, I wonder will there be a backlash by the Irish players, akin to the performance in Paris?

Given the media mauling they will be reading in the papers today (and more importantly) the end of match booing received by fans, I wondering will we see another "group huddle" where the Irish players defy Trap's tactics. Maybe not to the same degree as Paris, but I wouldn't be surprised to see some mutiny to Trap's way of thinking.

Its called being realistic, they are better than us - but we can still get a point if we keep it tight.

Tell me thats not what Trap will be thinking?

And what about your own attitude to playoffs?

Put Duff on the left where he should be and McGeady on the right.
Hopefully Long will be fit and play him up top on his own for the 1st half anyway. He did ok there against United and Chelsea for WBA!!!

we are goign to play alot better on tuesday.... for some reason, our away form is much better than our home form, under Trappatoni.

For some strange reason I am not overly pessimistic about this match, if we had of won last night it was possible we would go to Russia looking for a draw and lost, but I think we could see a better performance and we could win this game. Anyone think McCarthy will play? After watching last nights game we could desperately do with some creativity in the middle, and Trap admitted after the last time playing 4 in the middle was a mistake, so could he go with a fifth in McCarthy?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,543 ✭✭✭JerryHandbag

Long confirmed out for Russia. Came up on sky this morning that Keane was out too but Im guessing that was an error.

I'm sticking my neck out, but I think we should drop Robbie Keane. We badly need that extra man in the middle and Doyle thrived in the lone-man role at Wolves.

Robbie Keane is our most likely goal source. Until he goes four or five games without a sniff of a goal, he should always be in the starting line up if we have any intention of winning. Doyle was abysmal last night and if anyone is getting dropped, it should be him.

Oh, I fully agree. Keane always gets into the right positions to have chances, which Doyle seldom does. But can Robbie realistically play on his own? We'd have to get the ball on the deck a lot for him to be effective, IMO.

We have to drop one of the strikers for the greater good anyway, no question.

Can someone clear somthing up for me. I read a while ago that if we finish level on points with anyone the head-to-head between those two sides would determine who finishes higher. However, I think it was Trap who was going on about our goal difference as if it mattered last night.
Does anyone know for sure which it is?

Head to head, then Goal difference AFAIK. We're ahead of Slovakia simply because we scored an away goal against them whereas they didnt against us.

I personally hate the Head to head system. Goal difference is much better as it lets everyone know exactly what needs to be done in the final games.

Head to head first, so at least we are ahead of slovakia on that score

I hope Trap knows for sure anyway!
Whatever about beating Russia I certainly can't see us winning by 2+ or even matching their 3-2 away win in Dublin.
I can see Russia being held to a draw against Slovakia and beating Andorra meaning even if we do draw against Russia and win our remaining fixtures we wouldn't topple Russia.
So if it is head-to-head then we need to beat Russia for a realistic hope of top-spot.

Their current keeper, however, is dodgy so there is always a chance!
