A special committee in Cobh is seeking €2 million for commemorative events to mark the sinking of the Titanic next year.

The plans include a memorial garden to contain two legacy projects, a glass wall depicting the Titanic at anchor in Cork Harbour and a stone from the garden of a house once owned by Bruce Ismay, former chairman of the White Star line.

The committee, set up two years ago, plans to kick-off the year-long tribute with a lavish black tie dinner to replicate the entertainment laid on for first-class passengers aboard the liner. Plans include a revamp of the pier – where passengers departed Cobh and were ferried to the Titanic – at an estimated cost of €300,000. “We are . . . trying to raise funds . . . we are very optimistic about what we can achieve next year,” Cobh mayor Jim Quinlan said.

What's the deal with the Titanic? It sank. It was a failure. What's with this tribute? If it's for the dead we've had much greater tragedies since 1912.

There have been several maritime accidents with worse death tolls than the Titanic.

Famous for being a massive f*cking disaster.

It always irks me when people say proudly "The Titanic was built in Belfast".

I mean, you wouldn't hear people from Berlin saying "Yeah, that's right, Hindenburg baby!! That was US mothaf*cka!!"

    Involving Irish people?

That's really what the quote was about.

Feck that. Is there anywhere replicating the third-class entertainment? I'll go to that instead.

Look I'm the last person on here to discredit someone fighting in the 2nd world war, but boarding a ship to fight against 'the hun' is not seriously in the same league as someone boarding a ship to a new life in the United States as it was in the early 20th century.

Third class entertainment? Well, I'm sure there's a museum of some sort nearby.

Is where a person just happened to be born significant now? :)

Next they'll be issuing a small book to verify this and restrict movement to other countries based on this seemingly trivial fact

They can't celebrate for the full year of 2012 because the world is ending in 2012. Eejits.
