Slightly embarrassing but i'm 22 and i'm still afraid of the dark! It's not usually every night, but on occasions where i'm watching some true crime doc which scares the hell out of me, I find it very hard to sleep and jump at every noise! For example, last night I had to keep my bedroom door open (as the light was on in the landing) as I had just read this: http://www.dark-stories.com/eng/annabelle_possessed_doll.htm

And even more sad is any time I go to a wake, I get really freaked out at night afterwards :(

Anyone on boards have this childhood fear?

It's ok I'm afraid of the dark too. I always sleep with fairy lights around my bed, it's very pretty and it works.

I'm more than twice your age and I'm still afraid of the dark. I've gotten braver since I had children (because you have to woman up when you have kids) but I'm still just as scared. When I was in my teens if my mother wanted garlic for the dinner she had to go down to my bedroom and get it from where it hung over the window and door. People used to laugh at me once I was married and had the husband permanently in the bed with me and ask how could I be afraid when he was there. They obviously didn't have to stay awake half the night when there was a full moon and check the palms of his hands for hair growing. It sounds silly now but that's the way it was/is. Nowadays though I'm just as scared of waking up and finding a stranger in my room as I am a vampire or Frankenstein.

I can't understand though why my daughter shatters crystal chandeliers when she sees a spider in her room or why people have a fear of rats (nice furry creatures that they are). Most people have some phobia and if you can't get over it, it's a matter of finding a way to live with it so it doesn't take over. I have a keyring fob with a little torch on it which I keep beside the bed in case there's a power cut during the night and I wake up in the dark. The way I feel in the dark is much the way I imagine I'd feel if I was buried alive.

Watch out for the Bogeyman under your bed too.

Although you should be safe for a few days as he had root canal yesterday, is on antibiotics and not allowed out until Monday.

Occasionally yeah, if I'm alone in the house at night, and have watched something a bit scary.

I wouldn't be bothered about it, it's an instinctive reaction.
I don't believe in ghosts, goblins or even ghoulies, but it's natural to sometimes get that little pang of fear, and once you get it it can last for a little while.

why's it sad to have a fear of something? lots of people have fears over things, it's hardly sad. irrational mostly, but not sad.

I'm not afraid of the dark but I am afraid of stubbing my toe on something while fumbling around in the dark.

What I find helps is to assert my dominance like a chimp or gorilla just before going to bed, this would involve jumping around the room, bouncing off walls, breaking branches, grunting loudly and beating my chest. It seems to scare off any ghouls.

to be 22 and be afraid of the dark in your room, with other people there too, not fears in general!

    yeah...like most fears, they're irrational.

I think it only happened once that I was up all night scared of the dark. I was in my old house with my bf and it was really late when we went to bed and he wont sleep with any lights on which is normally fine for me when I've got a boy in the bed (because in my mind they can slay anything that comes through the window or door(even though the only time something frightening did happen outside when I had a boy in the bed, it was me getting up to deal with it!!)).
That night I was so tired my mind played tricks on me and I saw shadows at the window that weren't there. So I spent the whole night huddled into his chest and every now and again I kept peaking over his shoulder to the window to make sure there was nothing there. Was not fun.

When I have The Fear from the drink I am afraid of the dark, I had to sleep with the light on the other night so the fella with rats for eyes and his spiders coudn't climb into me bed

I think it's a rational evolutionary fear to be uncomfortable with darkness (Predators used to eat us). The majority of people grow out of it but it might be worth seeking help if it becomes a major problem.

There are reasons to be afraid of everything which is why we should be afraid of nothing.
I used to be afraid of the dark but it may have had something to do with my older siblings covering me with a duvet and not letting me out.
"Don't dark me" I would say from underneath.
For years I needed the hall light so sleep on as well.
But it was a childhood fear I faced by covering myself with the duvet when alone and eventually the darkness did not bother me.

I could go on and on about this subject but I'm afraid I have to finish.

My 29 year old mate, who's a former MMA fighter and lives out in the sticks where there is no street lighting, is afraid of the dark.

I guess it depends on the person

I don't so much have a fear of the dark as much as specific locations in the dark.

When I was a baby, Dessie O Hare, "the border fox" the murderer who once cut off a dentist's fingers, slept in a derelict house on our farm and held up a local man at gunpoint.

Stories of the event when I was growing up always filled me with dread that "the border fox" was coming back to catch us (a threat my parents employed with wild abandon) and I still can't walk into an outhouse or a shed at night without thinking of him. Even his name gives me the creeps, and I believe he is out of prison now.

If you're reading this Dessie, you owe us some rent.

I'm in my mid-late 20's and still afraid of the dark (only the pitch black dark though). Truly puts me to shame and only my nearest and dearest (and er...you good folks) know it. I've been attacked a few times when asleep in the dark etc so I don't think my fear is too irrational. Pitch darkness scares me because I'm more vulnerable to attack. I deal with it better now but I leave the blind a little up at night so there's a smidgen of moonlight coming through the window. I don't think it's that big a deal unless it's really interfering with your life OP.

I'm not under your bed. I'm in the attic, looking down on you through a hole in the ceiling.

As for myself, I'm a night owl and love being in the dark. I'll quite happily walk around in pitch darkness at night (like if I get up to get a drink/use the toilet). I've excellent night vision.

And there is something very relaxing about being outside in an open field during the night, with just some moonlight. I remember being about 13 and staying down in Rosslare. As a dare, my mates and I decided to sleep in an old derelict church on top of the old (empty) stone graves. I think I was the only one that actually slept that night.

    Bring on the darkness!!!
