Crochet Help--wave/ripple pattern

    Hi Crochet-ers,

I'm fairly new to crochet (more at home with a pair of needles in my hands), and have gotten stuck with a ripple pattern. Hope someone here can help. (Note, this is not a "professional" pattern, but one designed by someone on Etsy.)

After rows of dc, I have 70 stitches.

1st R: Ch3, dc in same as ch3, dc in next 4, *skip next st, 2dc into each of next 6 sts, [skip next st, 1dc into next st] 5 times; rep from * to last 5 sts, sk1, dc in next 3, 2dc in last st.

2nd and all even rows, ch1, sc across.

3rd R: ch3, dc in same, dc in next 3, *skip next st, 2dc into each of next 6 sts, [skip next st, 1dc into next st] 5 times; rep from * to last2, dc in next, 2dc in last.

Pattern here says I should have 64 stitches. I had 86, and the increases and decreases are off-kilter, not lining up vertically. Row 5 is similar to above and repeats for desired length.

I have the first 4 pattern rows charted on a spread sheet that I've attached. It explains what I'm doing better than words. I didn't include the return sc rows.

I'm making a cocoon for a friend's baby who will be arriving very soon, so I'd appreciate it greatly if anyone can lend me a hand with this. Many thanks.

I am at a bit of a loss to see how that pattern could produce a ripple, however while I can crochet, I haven't done anything in ripple.

I suggest you google for a tutorial on crochet ripple patterns, and when you have figured out how to do the ripple, then adapt it to your cocoon pattern.

Be aware that there are two types of crochet, and it is often very difficult to know which one you are reading. American crochet is not the same as English crochet, the terminology is used differently. So for example what one calls double crochet, the other calls treble. You need to establish what type you have learned, and what type is in the pattern you are using or patterns will not make sense.

Thanks, Looksee. I have picked up the difference between Am/Eng terms and patterns, so that's not the problem. I wish it was so simple. The first row has produced a bit of a ripple, with the increases and decreases, but the subsequent rows just don't match. Anyway, I suspect your advice is the best, and I'll just have to look at a variety of ripple patterns and then do my own thing.

Check out "The Art of Crochet with Teresa" [Richardson] - she had some great tutorial videos on YouTube that will take you through most stitch patterns - stitch-by-stitch.

Hey, KazM, thanks for the link. I'll definitely be going back there a few times.

In the meantime, I have found a few places that show how to do the ripple I want, and it's done just the way I imagined it should. But if anyone else here can make sense of the original pattern, please let me know!

Just wanted to note that I got a correction from the lady I got the pattern from, and it came out beautifully. Thanks for your input though.
