I've seen it done very good, but most Irish people just use it to bring a ****e car to a show.

    Edit:

    Eg this,

    http://www.volksworld.com/imageBank/v/vw-wallpaper-summer-10-13.jpg

There's no rust on it at all, that painted on to look like rust.

Have to say I like it in a very strange kind of way.
And if it's done well, might even look good closeup, whilst fooling you at a distance. And maybe won't get keyed and nicked like some really shiny car.

I've read the full feature on the e28. I like it. That golf looks savage!

I was going to buy this mercedes replica toy a couple of years ago that i saw in Amsterdam. Its that 'barn look' which is so appealing

    mercedes-barn-discovery.jpg

I can pick up a cheap BMW or Merc here in NZ with no worries re Tax/insurance so I am considering doing a Rat on it.

I like the rat look. It'd be fairly unique on something like an E39. Probably more hassle then an actual respray as you're have to go back to bare metal.

Personally I want a car with every panel a different colour. Not different shades of each colour but a completely different colour.

I really don't see the point in this at all. I'd rather drive a felter, and that's not an easy statement to make.

The above was one of the best builds i ever read... I like the look but probably only works on certain cars..

There was a great lookin bmw 2002 at the Terenure car show

I like some aspects of it, but why lower the cars so much?

what the hell is a felter? are these the bog standard cars with cloth seats etc?
I've seen this mentioned loads of times...especially on audi threads.

While I can appreciate the whole Rat look as a reaction against all those pampered/gleaming show-cars that probably never get driven, it really only works well if the car is all-out ratty from top to bottom. It seems to suit the minimal stripped-down 40's & 50's american hot-rods. To my eyes an 80's VW Golf or Merc with a heap of rust spots and scratches just looks a bit pants.

The cars with forced rust and fake patina are for people who don't have the balls to have a genuinely rusty and nasty car. I have no respect for that stupid carry on at all. There's a difference between having something with genuine wear and patina, because that tells a story, and deliberately damaging otherwise undamaged paint and parts just to fit in with a particular "scene" or a "look".

As far as I know, it comes from the biking world

They've had the rat bike craze for quite a while now.

I have to say, it smaks of spoilt rich kids, trying too hard not to look like, spoilt rich kids.

How about treating rust so that it's stabilized and protected from the elements but still looks rusty?

That BMW 5 is just lovely.. one of my favourite cars looks wise.

There is a guy in Munich, must work in hotel I've been to a couple of times - well at least he parks there - he has an Avensis 98-03 model estate.. tidy stamdard red paint with just a fully rusted bonnet and banded wheels, no trims.. I swear it is the coolest car in Munich! Really seeng is believing!

That's mostly (bar a few necessary repairs) the original 1950 paint, worn through naturally, and lacquered to protect the steel.

I have to admit that I always did like the idea of having a car that looks like a total wreck, but in fact is only painted as such. In reality it would be spotless. If that is well done, it could look quite good and you'd get some amount of double takes.
But I also dig the genuine rustbucket thing and having owned many of them (though not deliberately made to look that way, these where just bangers), one day, if I have the money (quick, put me in the dreamer thread) I'd love to get a genuine, piece-of-sh*t, rusty as fcuk, 70's Merc.:D
Let's take this one step further: Only when you can use the chassis as a pasta sieve, are you a true rat-head, anyone who hasn't got the balls for a swiss cheese chassis is a pansy!;)

Dont know about this rat look business, I'm not open minded enough to do that sort of thing to a car. Clean is how I like them.

**** that, the idea of the ratbike is to keep it on the road for as long as possible with as little maintenence as possible bar what it takes to keep it mechanically sound and safe

Afraid not, those are just a couple of photos he sent from his mobile phone.
The event was run by RUTLAND AREA VEHICLE ENTHUSIASTS, but there doesn't appear to be much about them out there on the interwebs.
