Flipping the Spring

I've a kings arms 8mm gearbox in an M4 with a G&P M120 motor and a systema M100 spring. The gun is shooting pretty hot when test firing and although the spring probably hasn't 'bedded in' yet I don't think this will be enough of a reduction in FPS.

I was reading that flipping the spring in the gear box so that the tighter coils are inside the piston will reduce the FPS significantly (up to 50fps depending on the spring) and I'm thinking this may work but before I strip the M4 down again, has anyone tried this and to what level of success if any?

I'd really rather not cut the spring to reduce the FPS

    Just buy a new Spring?

I've put a stiff M90 in it - shot hot, a loose m120 - shot hot, systema m100 - shooting less hot but still OTL
I've had it with springs, so I'm hoping a little fine tuning will sort out the issue.

    What about m80 or m85?

Flipping a spring - to be fair LOL! The person who said that should be hit with a rotten fish, the fps will remain the same regardless of the coils location. Buy an M85 and it should have you sitting at circa 320, if it's high, take a coil off.
The M100 is designed to give 350fps. If you don't wanna buy a new spring, snip a coil off and flatten the edge.

About half way down the page.

I have to admit, I have my own doubts as to whether it does anything, but I'm off work tomorrow so I think I'll give it a blast and see what happens. Failing that I might just lop a coil off.

The power is determined by the strength of the spring - the spring is still compressed to the same degree, so I really cannot see how flipping it would make any blind bit of difference.

If your gun has gotten a good air seal, then you really should be no higher on springs than an M85 - it's only when your gun is leaking to hell that an m100 is needed, at least in my experience.

You're better to be too low, than too high...at least you're legally allowed be in possession of one too low :P

and you would still be better off fixing the leak :)

OK, all sorted. Flipping the spring didn't produce the significant drop in FPS that had been claimed (surprise surprise). Not having had time to get out and buy another spring I went down the trial and error route of cutting the spring. It's been cut, filed down, heated, adjusted, cooled and this process has been repeated many times. She's shooting a consistent 318FPS now and pumping them out at 20 RPS - back of the net!
