Considering your intended use you really only need a very basic model.

    300-400 euro would be ample.

I was looking at the same one but not at that price, both Amazon.co.uk and Saveonlaptops.co.uk are doing the same spec as far as I can see for £478.99 around €550.00 and you can get €50 back you can claim it back from Samsung.
Have a look, let me know what you think.

Whats your budget ? like its been mentioned you shouldnt have to spend more than 400, is HD space the main requirement ?

€350-€600, Ideally €450 but if a very good one came on offer, with a 5-6 year life span without looking like a brick, ok.
Its for the Teen's birthday, not big into gaming more music and stuff.
I would like to get 15.6, good speed, good memory, and I feel 2nd gen is the way to go.
Looking at i3, 4-6GB, 500-750 GB HD, Battery life 4H+ although I don't see it moving around much.
Have seen a Lenovo G570 i5, 6GB HD, 640GB for £479.99, that's as big as I would be willing to go.
    Toshiba sat C660 i3 6GH, 640GH HD £369.99.
    Sam RV520 i3 6GH, 750GH HD £478.99 £50 CASH BACK.
Would the Argos Ire Tos C660 or the SamRV510 both for €374.99 neither with 2nd gen but bricks and mortar, easy life do the job. Free case and 1/2 price office.
    Appreciate thoughts
    Thanks.

Thanks for the help. I ended up getting the Samsung RV511 for €550 on Amazon.. hadn't thought of looking there.

Great spec on it I reckon. Space is the main thing I wanted with top speeds. Hate having to wait for things to load etc...

You were very foolish indeed. What you have basically done is bought a Lamborghini to drive to Tesco's, when a Ford Fiesta is all that's needed.

The below option would have been more than adaquate and, at €350, would have saved you 200 nick nock.

    Ok I'll bite.
    £299 yes good.
Duel core-old school. (is it good enough for 5 years of new things being developed) Will it be like a Discman.:D
320GH HD average/below average. Constant external HD use.
Good make/very reliable. But for an extra €100 would you be bothered?
    Thanks for the reply anyway.:)

I guess the chap could suddenly develop a penchant for gaming.

My laptop is about 4 years old and it can perform the tasks mentioned above with consummate ease.

I bet you regret sinking your gnashers into this one.

So are you saying that all the bell and whistles e.g. i3, i5 to a young kid 14-18 are not worth a s*** unless they are fairly gifted at the auld computer thing.
Just want to do right by the kid.
    Honest response please.

Well I'm pleased with the purchase. Better than the one I was looking at and its got great memory and top speeds.

Was mainly looking toward Samsung's because I've heard great things about them from people with them. Had a look at Viao's but thought Samsung overall offered a better deal

I don't doubt it but did that same laptop cost 350 four years ago?

    Hay Marco
Would you have an opinion on what I said in post 7, would a basic Argos €375.00 laptop get me over the next 5-6 years or will I be getting the doggy eyes Christmas 2014 because the basic one can't handle some new thing?

    I'll answer your question.

A basic laptop such as the one I linked will certainly last for 5-6 years if your needs resemble the initial poster.

One piece of advice though: do not buy from Argos! They do not offer good value compared with online retailers.

I would urge you not to make the same mistake as the OP. What he did was come on here for advice, then ignore all pearls of wisdom proffered.

I have weaknesses like everyone else, but what differentiates me from people like the OP is a willingness to learn from people who have superior knowledge in certain areas.

The OP's wallet is €200 lighter as a result of his poor attitude.

Taking into the account the natural reduction in the price of electronics, it is the same level laptop.

    Thanks Yag
I don't see the link though. I didn't want to tell OP that I found his choice depending on spec quite a bit cheaper elsewhere.
