Let me make a couple of prefaces to this thread:
    (1) I think it is more fitting in AH than in Religion as this is specifically concerning Irish Catholicism which is seemingly not de rigueur over yonder.
    (2) Take it as given that sensibilities of other religions and none are not taken into account in this make believe state!!!!!!!.

SO: Its often said that this is a Catholic country. What if Ireland truly was a hard line theocracy in the same manner as many Islamic states with religious observance as the foundation for legal and political institutions.
Could you as a catholic follow "Catholic law"?
A total ban on the sale and use of contraception
A total ban on the sale and consumption of meat on Fridays
Some form of legal sanction against those found pregnant outside of marriage.
Homosexuality illegal and punishable by law.
Enforced attendance at mass on Sundays.

Im sure you get the picture.
    So. Could you?

Its taken us that long to get away from all of that.

    You need to add:
    • Women banned from working in civil service when married.
    • Priest tells you what university to attend.
    • Only allowed to play certain sports.

Jesus focking christ we used to live in a backward country.

Ironically, in a hardline Catholic state, the Catholic church would be outlawed because of its criminality. :pac:

A total ban on the sale and use of contraception

A load more single mothers running around. On the flip side you get to shoot your muck up yer "burd"
A total ban on the sale and consumption of meat on Fridays

That COMPLETELY ruins my Fry Day - Friday !

Some form of legal sanction against those found pregnant outside of marriage.

    Suggestions ?
Homosexuality illegal and punishable by law.

What? Like no Same Sex marriages ?
Enforced attendance at mass on Sundays.

Go to mass or be publicly flogged and stoned ? Could beat the pub I suppose.
    So. Could you?

    Could you ?

I could, didn't they do a lot of stoning in biblical times...

oh wait wrong type of stoning......

If it became like that again I would be gone from this country.

It still sickens me that 20 something years ago Divorce and Homosexuality was actually illegal in this country.

I am really disgusted by the Blasphemy Law that was introduced a while back.

The Catholic Church have no moral right to be in state business these days espcially with science becoming such a force with FACTUAL information.

My Granny, may God rest her sweet cotton stockings used to have to go to Church to be "Churched back into the Church" after giving birth.

Then the priest would tell her to go and have another kiddy as it was good for the country and the same condesending circle of "forgiveness" would happen again !

Living under those laws to please a God is tantamount to living under a Dictatorship.

I appreciate the feed back however i didnt intend this to become a Church bashathon... really.... :o
Im just curious to see if any of those who constantly throw in "its a catholic country and Im a catholic" have the strength of their convictions.

can we get into that maybe?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,230 ✭✭✭✭ejmaztec

There'd be no internet, no satellite dishes, no porn, and on Sundays the local snatch-squads would be out dragging people into church.

I dont understand how so many people tick the 'catholic' box on the census. It gives the catholic church incorrect numbers of followers to boast about, boosting the idea that we are a 'Catholic Nation'.
'Catholic Nation' me arse. I don't know one person, who was baptised as catholic, myself included, who could truly describe themselves as catholic.. even if one goes to mass the odd time or wants their children to be baptised.
To be Catholic is to be anti-women, anti-gay, anti-science, etc. and so on. People say it is a cultural thing, staying loyal to the tribe and all that shyte... get a life! Just cos you don't want to upset your mammies, stop supporting an institution that kept our country in a backward state for decades!

In a pretend Catholic (or any other) theocracy I'd be a pretend freedom fighter against the pretend theocracy.

I'd plant pretend bombs which would explode pretend confetti all over the theocrats.

    Pretentious?

What question is that? I'm assuming you mean the OP.

In that case, I'd answer no - enforced Catholicism isn't in the Church's best interests.

Nope. The question was could you as a Catholic live strictly to catholic law...I think.....
Not do you think it is a good idea or good for the Church....simply
    "Could you?"

    Anti-gay...
    anti-science..

The church is not "anti-gay" as you call it. Every person is to be treated with dignity. It's the grizzly sex bit that the church has a problem with.

As for anti-science. Science informs the church on modern developements. Science is not a religion in itself as some of its staunch adherents believe.

A total ban on the sale and use of contraception

    We used to have that
A total ban on the sale and consumption of meat on Fridays
    This isn't Catholic...?
Some form of legal sanction against those found pregnant outside of marriage.
Ever hear of the Magdalene Laundries?
Homosexuality illegal and punishable by law.
    It used to be

Sadly, our country used to be very much a theocracy. That is the one and only thing which has ever made me ashamed to be Irish. When I first read about Magdalene asylums a few years ago I was so horrified that I genuinely considered leaving this country and not coming back.

We still have a looooooong way to go, I'm afraid.

High time that the Catholic Church stops having a strong control over catholic schools its annoying. They are going out by the wayside so think modern ireland and the state have a better chance of keeping a better control over schools that are now catholic but won't be anymore. Be glad to see that day that the catholic church don't have anymore control over schools.

Well - given the historical tithe, 1/10th of income the Church charges - and compare that with the amount of taxes that this bankrupt state demands - just saying. That, and from memory, over the last century 10's of millions of people were killed by their own government - Theocracy might have it's advantages.

Well, you could, but what would be the point?

All it really proves is that AH is not a forum which is especially welcoming to Catholics, and they don't bother much with it.

AH is not the world. AH is not even Ireland.

You've misunderstood the term "Catholic Country".

It means that the vast majority of people in Ireland are considered Catholic.

The vast majority of people take some part in the Church, whether by attending services, observing traditions, marking Births, Deaths and Marriages in a Catholic Church or just by generally identifying with the faith.

It's just like Europe in general is considered a Christian continent, the Middle East is Islamic, etc, etc.

Obviously, nobody in their right mind wants to live in a country where religious practice is state enforced.

Basically, your asking a pretty dumb question so don't be surprised that your thread isn't getting that much attention.
