Speeding Fine

what would happen if someone received a penalty notice for speeding but couldn't afford to pay the fine at the time so let it lapsed.

When they went to pay the fine (because funds were now available) they were told they couldn't because too much time had lapsed and a summons would be issued.

What would be expected to happen in court? Would a judge tripple the fine? What would happen if the person couldn't afford to pay the additional fine?

Double the penalty points, probably double the fine.

It'll be another 3 months before its in court, so start saving.....

Drive slower and you'll save petrol thereby saving money, and you won't have to worry about speeding fines.

thanks for that but in 20 years driving first offence with PP's. Over taking on a motorway FYI it was 85km in an 80 zone not excessive and not making excuses but just can't catch a break.. Taking responsibility and have no problem with the PP or paying fine but just didn't have the money at the time.

Ironic that you use the words slow and steady here in relation to a speeding fine...

Don't blame the system. You were speeding and you had ample opportunity to pay the FPN but you did not do so. You could always try and explain to the judge that you could not afford the fine but i doubt he/she would listen to you. As someone has already said, you have plenty of time to start saving before the summons comes.

85km in an 80km zone, on a motorway???

What motorway was this? From my understanding the lowest speed in this country on a motorway was 100km/h on the M50.
