Hi I'm thinking about my next car, probably won't buy til next year but just wondering in the a6 what would be the engine to go for? I don't think it would do diesel milage maybe 10000 a year and resale value won't really matter. I would keep til it was worthless anyway.
I drove a diesel 2.7 quattro as a rental last year and it was very nice but this is the only experience I had in one. Would the 2 litre petrol or diesel be underpowered. Or is the 3.2 petrol worth going for?
O I will be buying a few years old probably 07 or 08

The 3.2 petrol drank more fuel than many v8 Bmw's. It was powerful - there is only one for sale in Ireland.
The 2.0t had 170bhp and really is the only option in this country but most are manual, few are quattro and none are auto with quattro!
There was a 2.8fsi available not many sold here but a uk one would be a nice option.
Don't bother buying a diesel wasting your time and money.

On the basis you are keeping it until it's worthless, you should get a fully kitted out 3.2 IMO.

Nice low mileage and bit of bi-turbo poke but at €10k Inc VRT and travel it's far too much for a 10y/o A6. In fact I can't think of anything from 01' worth that kind of money this side of supercar. An m5 is touching that now

OH drives 08 2.0T past few months now. Nice to drive very comfortable. Costs approx €110 to fill up and if driven easy can get about 400+ miles out of a tank. Not to slow off the blocks but you will see the petrol gague drop quickly if driven hard.
Tax of €614 not too bad
Has all the bells & whistles, bluetooth, ipod, sat nav, xenons, preped for DVD so fairly luxurious.
I'd give it a thumbs up although haven't bought it for a service yet..that could change;)

I'd avoid the 2.0 PD TDi of that vintage, lots of problems with injectors and oil pumps. The 2.0T is probably the safest bet, 170bhp is decent, less troublesome and cheaper to buy than the diesel.

This might be worth a look at, ok mileage is above average but it has decent spec for an Irish A6, full service history and the price is not that bad:

+1 unless he goes for the facelift model from 09 on. The older PD engine is a right bag of spanners.
