Facebook pages

Hi everyone, something irked me this evening and just want to get people's opinion on it.

I was browsing Facebook, and I noticed in the suggested "likes" pages bar, a page at least 6 of my friends had liked, it read something along the lines of, "What's an antidepressant for lesbians called? Tricoxagain!"

I'm not gay myself, but this struck me as incredibly ignorant, I know a lot of Fbook pages are jokey, but I thought this kind of humour would have went out with the Dark Ages! What bothered me was that those of my friends who liked it would seem to be fairly clued in, progressive young people, in their teens or early 20's mostly, and quite frankly would know better than to find such creaky old lines hilarious.

Anyway, at the risk of rambling on, I'll throw this over to you and see what ye think!

Humour is subjective and whilst I am incredibly open minded and liberal, I do admit to having liked pages on FB that are jokey against certain things. It's just for fun and reflects my sense of humour. I wouldn't think too much about it. :)

Weird senses of humour are very in vogue at the moment so it's no surprise to find people create and like these pages.

Well that group just isn't funny. If it was funny and offensive I wouldn't mind :pac:

To be honest, I wouldn't take much notice over groups like that. I'm sure if someone went through the groups I've liked in the past on facebook, they'd find something to accuse me of

I guess that's the problem with "liking" a joke or a page -- everybody can see it. In the real world, you'd be more discriminating. Like, I wouldn't tell the "strapadichtomy" joke to certain sensitive souls I know.

Meh. Not a particularly good joke but it is just that; a joke. And honestly I would say it's more offensive to people with depression than it is to lesbians (though I've been on antidepressants myself for a good while now and wouldn't be particularly bothered by it.)

I'm young, clued in and progressive, yet in the past I've laughed at gay jokes, jokes about the Holocaust, dead baby jokes, racist jokes etc. That doesn't make me a homophobic, racist, anti-semitic babykiller; just someone who appreciates black humour. Again, the joke here is a bit weak but anyone who gets outraged over it needs to grow a thicker skin tbh.

And, as was mentioned, homour is subjective. Personally I'm much more bothered that people somehow find "comedians" like Lee Evans funny than I am about people laughing at those kind of jokes. :pac:

Mmm, fair enough points, I was on a bit of a militant tip at the time and I think that page name put me over the edge. :)
Rubbish joke anyway, their sense of humour is severely found wanting, really.

i find its common especially with the younger facebookers i know (younger cousins) to just 'like' a page or group that sounds good/funny without actually looking at whats on the page.

its just a naff joke to me. its gets a bit of a chuckle from the schoolboy humour part of me but not so much. its one of those jokes that looks a bit funny written down but when said out loud it loses the affect.
id say a lot of folks respond to the joke and just 'like' it - even if theyre not in the least homophobic or that.

I smirked at that the first time I heard it, and I'm one of those progressive youths you're on about, and a lesbian, have seen it liked on facebook by other lesbians - hate that bloody word and you're after making me say it twice, gah!. Humour is subjective, and people my age are a lot more loose about "insulting" jokes in our peer groups because they don't insult in the slightest within those groups, don't make a big deal out of something when you have no frame of reference as to whether it is actually so, the intent to belittle or discriminate is not there, quite the opposite, everyone gets the piss ripped out of them equally, hooray for progress.

Some jokes you like, some you don't.

It's just a joke - let it go.

I may be going off topic slightly here but sticking with the Facebook thing how many times, have you seen people calling each other faggs or the infamous “I have to tell every body that I’m gay!!”??
I don’t really get my knickers in a twist and generally just ignore it but these are supposed to be my mates (Friends) and they know I’m gay! If you apply the same theory to other minorities; I feel people would object more. Frankly I’m scared to say anything in case people start seeing me as some sort of LIKE…. FB monitor!! Just my tuppence worth…
