Toyota corolla key fob

I have a 00 corolla, the plastic housing that holds the the buttons and battery for the key fob together broke a few weeks ago.

Someone I know made the housing out of metal, which is a great strong job but the car won't start.

When u press the buttons to open the door, with new metal key fob it wont work until your really close to the car.

Is there something in the key that stops the car starting.

When I put the plastic housing back on car starts.

Transponder chip is embedded in the plastic I think. The metal is probably blocking the signal from the remote

I have a second key fob, if I left it in the car would this work or is it when I press the button the chip works.

The chip and the remote are separate. The transponder needs to be really near the ignition barrel to work.

Thanks I'll give it a go. See what happens.

YOu could sellotape the chip to the transponder ring inside. This will make hotwiring the car possible though and would have implications if your car were stolen without keys

Where is the chip. Inside the housing there is the battery and two buttons inside it own little unit.
    Is it inside this?

I can't rightly remember. I for some reason think its at the top of the key blade. I may be wrong and its part of the remote but I'm 99% sure that's not the case
