Independent.ie - trash?

I check the Irish Independent's website once or twice a day, sometimes there's something of interest on it, most of the time there isn't.

But the last while I've been finding it very sore on the eyes. Those 'play' buttons they place on all the pictures are annoying, and I can't stand the 'New' and 'Updated' red tags they've recently added. The journalistic content of the Independent has of course slid southwards, but its website seems to have gone tabloid out and out. Most of the head stories are about celebs or some sensational scandal.

    Opinions?

They are what their readers made them. You don't like, you don't read.

Isn't the new editor of the Indo online the last editor of The Sunday Tribune?

That is exactly what I have been noticing too. I know we live in a society which entertains the notion of celebrities, but I detest that aspect so always overlook it. Can't seem to do that anymore on the independent.ie website.

Very poor usabilty indeed, though they have tried to improve it. The content choices and slow rate of update doesn't help (it takes them until 6 or 7 am to get the online version of the newspaper synched with the daily).

Today's indo website under 'Featured' we have Rugby World Cup, Libya, Independent Blog, Video News, Mothers and Babies, and Independent Woman. Don't think there is a need to 'feature' the last two of those.

Apparently so. But then the Sunday Tribune's website was somewhat better organised (it had a lot less content though) than the ransom note design that is the Independent.ie's site. There is a serious need for some proper information architecture on that site.

An article in the website today, had a go at online message board users like ourselves for allegedly 'bullying' high profile celebs like Ryan Tubridy through our comments.

    A load of trash indeed.

I can't stand the Independent. But then, today, at work, I stumbled across this piece by Kevin Myers, which I found to be one of the most beautiful and poignant pieces of writing that I have ever encountered.

Why did you post a Facebook link? Here is a link to the Indo website with that article...

Is he implying that the Irish national team are doing well enough that he can support them again?
