Does anyone have any remarks regarding this 2nd hand car dealership in Mount Merrion? I'm thinking of buying off of them.

Bought my car from them. Noticed the remote fob for the key was banjaxed when i got home, didnt spot it on the test drive. They didnt want to know about me once they had their money. This is probably standard behavior from second hand dealers though!

I've never bought from them, but I have looked at a couple of cars there. They're nice enough lads by the standards of used car dealers, but i'd still feel a lot safer buying privately.

They always have a nice selection to be fair

I had a dealing with them also. All in all, I couldn't fault them really. They have a nice collection of motors to look at too :)

A few of the cars they had advertised some months ago were overpriced. When I was looking at cars last, they had one with more milage and in worse condition than the one I ended up buying at it was several hundred euro more on the price tag.

It was a grey Mazda6 MPS by the way and I think it's sold.

Average IMO; bought off them six weeks and have had to have two repairs (new slave cylinder & snapped handbrake cable) carried out under the 3rd party warrenty they gave with the car; like another poster said once they've got your money they'll lose interest quickly enough.

That said, I love the car I got from them and wouldn't have been able to afford it buying from a main dealer :o.

Hi, can you explain why you would feel safer buying privately?

    Thanks

Was interested in a car they had advertised a few years ago, went along unannounced to find two lads sitting in a pre-fab eating chips out of plastic containers. They didn't seem too bothered to interrupt their lunch to talk to me so I took my business elsewhere

As I was leaving it occurred to me that if that was how they treated prospects, God only knows what their attitude would have been if I was trying to get a problem sorted with car I had bought from them.

I'll leave Anan1 to answer for himself but I agree 100% with him. At least when you're buying privately you can size up the seller's attitude and make a decision as to how the car was treated. When you buy from an indie all you get is BS when you ask relevant questions (like 'where is the service book?' or 'how come the NCT is 6 months overdue?') and there is always the lingering doubt as to how the car ended up with him - in particular is it a car that received zero maintenance so the owner dumped it for cash on an indie because no main dealer would touch it?

In my book if you buy from an indie you have virtually no comeback if things go wrong so you might as well cut out the middleman and buy direct from a private seller, they're not as good as lying as dealers so you can usually tell the guy who's spinning BS from an honest seller who gives you straight answers when you ask questions.

I've done a lot of research on the particular car that I'm looking for and the price is definitely at the lower end without being outstanding value.

My only concern is if they were cowboys e.g. clocked mileage.

The car I am looking at has 35K miles and has had 3 services at 10K intervals so I can't see it being better maintained than that?

What type of documentation do you have for the services - invoices or stamps in the service book? A car with that type of service history doesn't typically end up for sale from an indie.

Nah, i don't think so. They seem an honest bunch, it's just after sales that maybe leaves a little to be desired but that's perhaps to be expected. For what it's worth, I've driven about 1,500 kms since getting my car on a mix of motorways, city and country roads and the engine has been (touch wood) rock solid.

It just had the stamp in the service book with the boxes ticked. I didnt ask to see invoices. Whay do you find it unusual to be sold from an indie?

Because if you have a car that has a genuine full service history you would be stark raving mad to sell it to an indie dealer, that's how you realise the least value for something that you've taken care of. Hence cars being sold by indies typically have zero or questionable service history and a lot of them are overdue on the NCT.

My experience dealing with indies is that if you even mention service history they'd set the dogs on you.

Are all the service stamps from the same garage and is that garage still in business?

It might be the case that the person who sold the car traded it in for one of their cars? They have a lot of high end cars.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 135 ✭✭smtdos

When I bought mine last year they'd a Masserati on the forecourt. The thing was shagged. They'd a guy trying to get the engine going, sounded very sick! So ya maybe the cars weren't looked after the best in their previous lives:)

They would have done much better selling it privately, you will not do a good deal with any dealer (franschise or indie) trading in secondhand for secondhand.

I think their prices look very competitive. Can't vouch for the cars themselves, but most seem relatively low mileage, with full service histories.

The quality of their stock has improved in recent years. When they first opened about a decade ago most of the stuff they had was sub standard and never that clean. Any other cars they had were ones that were typically hard to shift, as I remember their forecourt being the first place I ever saw a Subaru SVX.

They have always been suspiciously cheap with asking prices. I always wondered what the catch was, as sometimes they can have cars for well below market value.

I bought from deerpark motors back in September 2011 and I've been waiting till now November 2011 and still my car hasn't been fixed correctly. I've called 16 times within the time ive bought the car and only received 2 call back in each case the sales man was too busy to deal with me. They have nice cars but the after sales service is the worst I've come across. I would recommend not buying from them.
