OB GYN in Dublin

Hi all, I just recently moved to Dublin from New York. I have been on the pill for a number of years, and as such am required to go to my OB GYN doctor in the US two times per year for a check up and a new prescription for my pills. The checkup includes an internal exam, a breast check and general abdominal check -- and once per year, a pap smear test.

I have a few questions with how things work here --

1- I see that there are free smear test for women offered at local clinics -- is this a separate service from a regular OB GYN checkup?

2 - Can I get the smear test with a doctor at my checkup instead of at a clinic?

3 - I assume I would need to get my birth control pill prescription from an OB GYN..right?

4 - Can you recommend an OB GYN? Preferable in Dublin 1 or 2 but I would travel elsewhere for a really great doctor.

5 - Generally, how much should I expect to pay for the overall checkup?

THANK YOU SO MUCH! Finding a new OB GYN is definitely something I was not looking forward to with my move so I really appreciate any guidance you can give me :)

Your GP can sort your out with all of the above, no need to see a consultant. the smear test is free but a consultation for all else is approx €60.00

You only get a smear every 3 years in Ireland also. I know it's yearly in the States. If you search the Dublin forum for GP recommendations you'll probably find someone good. That's how I found my excellent doctor in Galway.

In Ireland GP's don't give internal exams when they are prescribing the contraceptive pill- they just recommend a smear every 3 years or year if you have had abnormailities in the past.

OP - A number of years ago I moved from the States and was quite surprised by the system here. My GP does my PAP Smears (just called smears here), but is surprised if I ask to do them more than every 2-3 years. Having a smear every three years is free, any additional fees incurs the standard GP fee (I think) . Otherwise I think there are seperate clinics but I've never looked into them.

As far as your pill prescription, your GP will also sort that. My GP gives me 3 months' worth of prescriptions & I take them each month to my local chemist (pharmacy) for filling. They won't give more than one month's dose at a time (or at least mine won't anyway). When I need more prescription I call my GP & pick up my next series from the receptionist the next day.

It's up to you to schedule any exams you feel necessary, although the Cervial Screening program is trying to issue reminders for smears. As far as breast checks/etc, again it's the GP, but it's not a regular thing. If you want one you schedule & pay for a check up appointment.

FYI, there is no such thing as an OB-GYN here...looking for anyone by that title will confuse your issue. Your GP will do most things, if you need further exams/tests they will refer you on to a consultant.

I can highly recommend the Well Woman clinic on Liffey St, just by the Ha'penny Bridge.

Thank you all so much for the information! And thanks for the recommendation to the Well Woman Clinic - I'd seen that one online and was wondering how it was as its pretty convenient for me.

Alya - thank you very much for that explanation! This is a very different system that will take some getting used to. I don't mind having to pay for pap smears in order to get one every year (I think its important based most likely on what I am used to).. I will have to search out a good GP as suggested so that I feel very comfortable to ask for the additional exams - going to the ob gyn was never a favorite task of mine!

Thanks again to all - and if you have any other well woman or GP recommendations in Dublin, please let me know!
