So im starting nuig this september and i had planned on doing corporate law. Unfortunatley i didnt get enought points and i was offered commerce. I accepted it and im delighted im going to galway :)

many people have told me that if i take enough subjects in 1st year in commerce i can then enter into corporate law for the second year....so does anyone know what the subjects are? Or any other advice i would need for these two courses?

Any relevant information is greatly appreciated :D

To be honest you're lucky you didn't get Corp Law, imo. I wouldn't rate Corp law at all. You come out with neither a good law degree nor a good business(commerce) degree. I personally feel people get lost in the excitement of having LAW attached to their degree, with this course.
Anyways, I think the cross over of subjects between these two might include accounting, economic and Mis. Maybe one or two more. You will also do business law in first year of commerce with plenty of law modules later on in your commerce degree. I think there will then be an opportunity for you to switch to an LLB of some kind(open for correction). In short you'll get a good taste of law by the end of your degree to decide if you still want to continue with your desire to practice law someday.

You do Business Law in 1st Year. Then in 3rd year you have the option to pick a range of Law Modules and go on to do the LLB after 3rd Year!

It's just way too broad. Broad can be good but this course doesn't really give you any direction at all. On completion you're still going to be many moons(and study) away from becoming a solicitor, accountant, economist, marketeer etc.I suppose if someone really wanted to do civil law and didn't get it, it wouldn't be the worst place to start.

Corporate law is a misnomer. You're basically doing law with business (it's not really a law degree either, requiring you to do the LLB to get all the subjects you need)

Commerce and the LLB is probably a better option, giving you a solid background in business before moving onto the law side of things.

Yeah but does the LLB not take 3 years after commerce as opposed to just one after corporate law?? or do the law subject in commerce make a difference?

If you've done Commerce and have chosen the right modules, then the LLB takes 2 years rather than 3.

Although I've heard from Commerce students that if you do enough law modules in the B.Comm then you can complete the LLB in one year. I have no idea if this is true or not though.
