Hi, I have a 1971 350 Sl Merc needing restoration. I have it 7 years and took it off the road 2 years ago to start restoring her.

There is rust in the usual areas but she was driving well prior to this.

I have two other classics and two young Kids so she will have to go:(. Any idea of worth (approx)

    Cheers
    Dave:)

How much rust is there on the car?. normaly a classic cars value is based on its condition. it could be worth anywere from 2k to 10k all depending on the mechanical condition of the car and the amount of rust on it.

There is rust in front footwells, rear sills etc. It's not a basket case but would need someone with welding experience. I don't really have the time or the interest...:(

From my experience the value of classics has dropped considerably with the economy downturn. The difficulty with buying restoration projects is that the cost of restoring them is indeed much higher than what one anticipates (unless one is capable of doing it) The only true way of valuing one is to put your own figure on it and advertise it. If it doesn't sell at that price , then reduce it. However I would suggest that you subtract the cost of restoration from a restored model and that will give you an indication of the price to ask for :p

like shawnee said, put your own price on what you think it may be worth and advertise it. try putting it up on donedeal classics. the only thing that maybe hard is finding a buyer if it needs alot of work. i think alot of people stay away from mercedes in cases with the car having alot of rust. a local mechanic of mine owned an old sl450 which needed a few things done to it but cost him alot, i think each wishbone on the front cost 600 euro and a set of plug leads 100 euro. i think that is why there such a price range for old mercs. hope this helps

Thanks for all your comments:). Not sure which way to go now. Was thinking about 2500 Euro or thereabouts.

Might give it a good look over and then decide.....

    Thanks again,

    Dave

I think you might be lucky to get €1,500, though you'll need to have her up and running after being laid up to even get close to this.

(I had a '72 350 SL, btw - yours must be a very early model).

I think you also need to specify the colour, and the condition of the interior and the hood.

I would agree with Dades to be honest I would say if you get €1000 it is not bad for a project at the moment.

Throw up a few photos here including any of rust damage and you'll get a better idea of what its worth.

    Hahaha!!!
1000 Euro for a 71 Merc SL. I don't think I'll be parting with the old girl then. You wouldn't buy a pushbike for that!

I think that Ugglasdav has given the most accurate valuation.

I hate when someone uses the recession as a tool to buy cheap goods even cheaper. That sort of exploitation will only work if the seller is really stuck and his back is against the wall.

I am none of the above.

I know I asked for your opinion..... Thanks for all comments, good and bad.
Might be time to stop this thread before it is suggested that I pay to get rid of the offending beast!!

Lots of cars are fetching very small money at the moment - and that's just a reality of the bottom falling out of the market across the board for anything indulgent. A rusty SL is an expensive proposition to sort out, and there's good ones for not a lot more than you'd pay for one needing work.

You be surprised what sort of car you can buy for pushbike money these days! If you have to sell at the moment, expect to feel bad about what you can get.

    Hi mercdave66,

Just to be clear I have no intention of buy your car whatsoever. I have far too much of them and they are not rusty at least not all. ;)

You asked for our opinion so we are giving it to you, after if you don't like my opinion far enough but let's not get tasty around here.

All the best in your sale.

As most have said, the market is terrible at the momemt. I'm glad you are not forced to sell. Keep it somewhere safe until the better times return or restore it and enjoy it :)
