Embarrassed about going to the doctor! Advice?

I am an 18 year old male and I am very self conscious and anxious about things.
I have a lump on my butt on the opening to my anal passage with about 3 years. The lump is medium in size but it only hurts every couple on months or so. I told my mother when I first got it and she just found it funny and did nothing about it at the time. I think I should go to the doctor but I am scared that he might laugh at me and make me feel awkward about it. Advice?
I am not looking for medical advice!

Just make an appointment with the doctor sure they see all sorts of things and I would highly doubt they'd laugh at you.
If you can tell your mam you can go and see a Doctor.

Doctors see all manner of strange things on all parts of the human body and they will be professional and compassionate. You will be able to describe what it is and where it is before he looks at it.

I can understand your embarrassment but believe me, it would be highly unprofessional of a doctor to laugh at a patient. Think about it, GPs examine all kinds of bodies, and to him/her it will be entirely routine to examine you. Just go and get yourself checked out to put your mind at ease.

I'd tell a hundred doctors before telling the mammy
    Yet you found this easier?

Just head to the GP, they've seen it all

My good friend is a doctor, and not trying to be crude, but she said she's always looking at bum holes as part of her job!! She passes absolutely no heed whatsoever.

Go to the doctor, seriously you'll get over the embarrassment much quicker than potentially bad news if it was left untreated.

You can request a man if you would feel better too.

It's great to look after yourself and you will feel relieved when it's all done.

    Good luck xxx

<snip>, my advice is go to the GP and discuss. Tell him/her that you have something embarassing to that you need to have sorted. A GP deals with this several times a day and in many cases he/she won't need to even look at the problem. Just book an appointment, once you do that then let the system take it's course.
There's a saying about embarassing illnesses....don't die of embarassment.

Hi OP! As other posters have said, doctors look at these kinds of things all the time. They probably see at least a few people a week with similar complaints, so it doesn't phase them. You can request a male or female doctor - whichever would make you feel more comfortable. They are not going to laugh at you or make you feel silly. It's their job to deal with these things in a professional manner. He/she may be able to put your mind at ease :)

Thanks everyone for the advice! I think my main problem really is finding out there's something wrong!:(

don't let that put you off OP, you'll be grand. it's most likely nothing serious, and sure on the chance it IS serious, then the sooner you go, the easier it will be to sort! you'll feel better when you get it over with!

Don't worry about embarassment with the doctor they have seen it all and you're just another face in the door since they probably have seen 50 people in a day.

As for worrying about whether it is something bad personally I would prefer to find out sooner and get it dealt with. Get to the doctor the sooner the better and get it checked.

Surely it's better to find out IF something is wrong (might be very minor) than to let it get any worse and be worrying about it?

Thanks everyone for the advice! I think my main problem really is finding out there's something wrong!:(

As opposed to leaving it and finding out whatever it was could have been treated/cured if you'd only come in sooner?

    Pick up the phone OP.

I had a lump in an embarrassing area and I got got my doctor to look at it while I was in there for some other reason. The relief of it turning out to be something completely normal far outweighed the slight embarrassment of the situation.
