I was made redundant at the end of last year and was asking for my P60. They told me if you get a P45 you dont get a P60.
    Is that right?

you are only entitled to a p60 if you are in employment with the company at the end of the year i.e. 31st Dec of the year in question. If you get laid off before the end of the year you get a P45 instead after you have received your final payment. So yes basically what you were told is right as you were let go.
