iPad v iPad 2

    Afternoon all.

Looking to get into the world of iPad, and since ive no hands on experience of either, I'd like to ask a question.

Is the step up from 1 to 2 the equivalent of stepping from iPhone 3gs to 4?

I've made that jump already, and I couldn't go back. The difference in screen quality and application loading is massive. Is it the same in the world of iPad?

    Thanks guys.

Well.. the screen and resolution is the same.

Jump in terms processor and addition of video cameras is the major plus.

I've an iPad 1 and it's not NEARLY enough to make me wanna upgrade.

If you have an iphone4 and a laptop you dont really need an ipad 2. I prefer using the phone rather than the ipad, also the lack of flash is a pain especially with something that costs so much.
Thankfully someone has offered to buy mine as its hardly used, just cant find any life changing use for it.

It's back to that old chestnut - what do you want to do with the device?

Do you need a device with a camera? It is a bit faster, but is that really an issue?

The ipad is very handy if you travel a lot, just stick it in your bag and it doesn't take up much space. Handy that it uses the same charger as the iPhone. I had an iPad and upgraded to an iPad 2, the difference IMHO is not worth the upgrade. iPad 2 is faster alright but it's not much faster, it's a lighter device but as soon as you stick a case on the iPad2 that difference is negligible.

If I was going for an iPad again I wouldn't care if it was an iPad 1 or 2, but if I could pick up an iPad 1 with 3G for the same price as an iPad 2 without I'd go for the former. Certainly wouldn't buy an iPad again without 3G, but if you don't travel then that's not an issue.

I certainly wouldn't buy an iPad with 3G.
Most phones now have a hotspot feature to tether with the iPad and for less money than the 3g premium, you could buy a mifi which is usable with all your gear.

Hotspot is handy alright, but it runs down the battery on your phone pretty quickly.

Like I said in previous my post, if I could get an iPad 1 with 3G for the same price as an iPad 2 without I'd go for the iPad 1 with 3G.

so would I, but there the Ipad1 only exists in history and secondhand or refurb and I wouldn't pay €120 extra for the 3g version over the non 3g version.

If I had the iPad I wouldn't of bothered upgrading to the iPad 2.

However it was my first purchase. So I went for the iPad 2. Not too much of a difference I can't imagine. The speed maybe. But the camera is terrible, handy for FaceTime but overall not a deal breaker. The Smart Cover is a handy little addition though. I got a 1mm rear cover and have the smart cover on front so it doesn't add too much thickness to the iPad.

I have an iPad 1 16gb wifi and was content enough with it, until my boss showed me his iPad 2 running iOS 5 beta mirroring the screen to an apple tv also running iOS 5 beta. (I also have an apple tv btw)

Very cool I thought, but I can't justify 500 quid just for that I said. But he told me to do what he did, sell his iPad 1 for 320 quid and get a 2 in the states for (after conversion) 360!!! new!! That's a cost of 40 to trade up. Plus whe the time comes for the iPad 3 it'll be a lot easier to do the same from the 2 to the 3 than the 1 to the 3, if you follow me.

Pretty sure that can be done with the iPad 1.

I thought I read mirroring was iPad 2 only.

As far as the AirPlay mirroring goes iPad (first generation) is compatible with iOS 5 (list of compatible devices at bottom of the page) So you'll be able to use AirPlay mirroring with your iPad 1.

And another thing is nobody would pay €320 for a 16GB iPad 1 at this stage.
The iPad (first gen) is available on the Apple Store as a refurb now. You can get the 32Gb for €379. I'd prefer to get the higher memory for one that's gonna be just like new and comes with brand new accessories and a 12 month warranty. All for the extra €59. Your best bet would be to stick with the iPad 1 mate.

Every mention of mirroring has been iPad 2, with some saying it's because of the processor.

And iPad 1's are still going for that money on donedeal, so I may sell while the sellings good.

I changed from an ipad to an ipad 2 and imo it was worth it.
The ipad 2 is noticeably faster, It's much better on the battery, I definitely get more use out of a charge than the original ipad and it also looks a lot nicer imo.
The weight of the ipad 2 also makes a difference, on paper it doesn't seem like much but it makes it easier to hold.
I don't use the camera on the back at all, I don't see the point to it, I think it was a case of keeping up with the android tablets.
The front facing camera however is great for facetime.

    Just my two cents.

I've been very tempted to upgrade to the iPad 2 just for the extra memory. I use my iPad 1 mostly for browsing, and the constant tab refreshing is very annoying. I know there are third party browser apps that don't have this problem but they are also very sluggish compared to Safari.

Wait till iOS 5 with tabbed safari browsing before making that decision, the few minutes I got to play with it I didn't notice much refreshing (maybe because I was using a 2) but that's one thing that annoys me about browsing as well.

The ipad 2 is a lot thinner and lighter than the ipad 1, the cam is a nice boost but the biggest advantage is the process boost and cam.

    but....

you can only jailbreak ipad 2's with 4.3.3 and if you buy a new one now it will not have that.

Since Apple have caught up with iPad 2 demand chances are if you picked one up in a bricks and mortar store it would have a previous iteration of iOS. And I'm not sure if Apple install individual small updates on the iPads. Think they only ship them with 3 digits e.g. iOS 4.1, 4.2 4.3

    Again I'm not 100% sure.

I am thinking of picking up an iPad 2 tomorrow in a bricks and mortar store, however, I'd much prefer it if I'd be able to Jailbreak it. Is there any way I could tell if it had 4.3/4.3.3 installed on it before buying it?

Unfortunately there isn't a way of knowing. But even with that being said you'll be wanting to upgrade to iOS 5 anyways to take advantage of all the new features and I'm sure they'll have it jailbroken quick enough when the Offical version is released. They seem to be getting quick at jailbreaking them lately.

So you could still pick one up and live without the jailbreak for a bit.

Just to follow up on this question I asked last night, I bought an iPad today in Arnotts and it came with iOS 4.3.3 on it.

Hope this helps others looking to buy an iPad who wish to Jailbreak it.

    Hey folks,

Just wondering if any iPad 2 owners could answer a quick question for me:

So, am thinking of getting one soon and was wondering what they are like for reading on, specifically .pdf mags such as The Economist, Rolling Stone, Uncut etc etc - you know the ones that are easily found on the web. I also have many pdf ebooks that I'd hope to use with it. What's the screen resolution like for reading these type of things? - Is it sharp and crystal clear? if not, I think I'll hold out for the higher resolution of the iPad 3.

Any info is greatly appreciated - cheers!

    J

The iPad / iPad 2 is great for reader magazines.. that's what I use mine for primarily.

I wouldn't be hoping on any resolution bump / retina display on an iPad 3 to be honest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,245 ✭✭✭Fat_Fingers

Its very good for mags. Poor for ebooks.
Ipad is good for indoor reading. Very poor for outdoor reading or anything else outdoors.
Resolution for PDF's is ok, not wow but adequate
But its not a Kindle and it should not be judge on reading capabilities only, if you are looking for device for reading ONLY i would suggest to look for something else.

People say the iPad 2 has the same screen as the original, it doesn't.

It has the same resolution but the screen is improved. The glass and LCD are bonded, it has improved viewing angles, brightness and contrast.

    Bump

Couple of months on and wondering if anyone has any revised opinions. Going to get one but not sure if i need to get a 2. can get a 64 g 3g 1 for the same price as a 32 wifi 2.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,212 ✭✭✭✭Tom Dunne

    Honest opinion? Not much difference.

I use iPad2 for Press Reader all the time, along with Kindle and I don't really see any difference between the iPad1 and iPad2.

I would go with the iPad1.

Youre not really comparing apples with apples to be fair. is 3G the primary concern for you. ? Will you need it? Also , the 64GB v 32GB - well one has double the storage space of the other. It seems to me that if you need the storage space and the 3G, youve answered your own question. ;)

If not, get the 2. Faster, lighter, camera.
