Hi, I'm a newcomer to TCD and I wonder is anyone here doing English literature and History (TSM) ? If anyone if, let me know, as I am so afraid that I'm not gonna make friends and I will be a freak standing in a corner :D so i would really appreciate it, if anyone doing the same course would contact me ;)

    K.

I'm not a fresher (unfortunately, would love to be an undergrad again!), but I just thought I'd reassure you not to worry about meeting people. In both of those subjects, you will be in lectures with 100-odd others, but you will also have seminars with about 10-12 others which are perfect for getting to know other people; the classes also only get smaller as you move up, I found :)

Good luck, both are fantastic subjects!

    Hey!

I'm 4th year English/History so if you have any questions about the course just give me a pm and Ill answer the best I can.

Don't worry at all about making friends. Everyone is in the same boat and really nervous. Go to your course meetings during Freshers Week, as well as general orientation and you'll be syprised who you get chatting to. Be open and friendly and don't be afraid to start up a conversation with the person next to you. The handy thing about English and History is its probably one of the most popular combos in TSM so it won't be long before you find another Eng/History person to compare classes with. As said, your tutorials will have about 10-12 people in them so you'll soon start to recognise people in lectures.

Another tip is don't be too stressed if you havent found your best friends within a week. It can take time to settle in and build up friendships. It might look like everyone is best mates by the first day of classes but it can take a few weeks for everything to settle down and to click with a group of friends. Just relax and go with the flow, 1st year Freshers is so exciting, just enjoy it!:D

Thanks for all that! I've been told that by nearly everyone, but you know, its just so surreal :D what i dont know though, is when do you get your actual timetable? is it during the orientation, or a letter? ;)

    .
IIRC you won't be able to access your timetable until after you've registered, so not until Freshers Week. However, the Freshman handbook is now online with all the various courses in it, it might have the times of lectures listed (though not tutorials, you have to wait until classes start to be assigned to them). Or you could look on the history and English websites, on the section listing all the courses- they sometimes list the lecture hours. www.tcd.ie/history and www.tcd.ie/English Oh and lilmizme, are you majoring in history or english, out of interest? Seems to be an agonising choice for a lot of people every year!

English and History here, too :) I can't wait to see how they differ from the Leaving Cert courses, because for history especially it was just ridiculous. Anyway I might see you around! :D

History and French :) Wasn't a massive fan of history at leaving cert, so hopefully will be quite different at uni - hope theres a good choice of modules!

Get ready for literally everyone saying "Oh that's a really unusual combination" whenever you tell them what you're doing! I do English and Maths too, going into 2nd Year, and I'm the last one (out of only four starting though, in fairness) who hasn't dropped out or transferred!

I'm majoring in English, the 4th year modules were just too tempting to turn down!! The english nerd in me got the better of me!

You'll get your timetable after registration. You'll be given a password that will enable you to log onto the Student Information System and will give you a personalised timetable with your tutorials etc on it. Keep an eye out for the introductions to the college network that ISS hold, theyre really useful for setting you up with your email address and showing you how everything works.

AFAIK, Eng and History TSM had about 14 hours a week in first year.

Also don't get too stressed about the readings when you start off. It's very easy to feel overwhelmed and think you'll never get the novels read, but it all works out in the end. You'll be suprised what reading you can get done waiting on a bus and between lectures. And if it does get too much, thats what sparknotes is for!!
