Quick Question: Do you bring a present if you are only invited to the afters?

And, is there anything I should know before going to an afters?

I have never gone to a wedding before so I amn't sure what to expect.

Most people say €50 in a card but only if you can afford it.

nothing to know really, just enjoy the dancing.

For the gifts, check this recent thread: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056364151

As for what to expect, it depends on the wedding but usually its just like a night out in the pub with people you know and a load more that you don't! Music, dancing, lots of drink and already-drunk guests. If its a family wedding, you'll probably be expected to talk to some of the relatives that you haven't seen since you were knee-high.

Dress will depend on the wedding but you're safe with smart-casual - no need for a suit if you're a guy, but I wouldn't wear jeans unless you know that its ok with the bride & groom. Thats it really. Enjoy!

Oh, this is a black-tie afters - hence me wondering about protocol.

Do people have afters after a black-tie wedding? would it not make sense NOT to have it black-tie for afters? I'd imagine it would still cost you as much to hire out a suit for a couple of hour as for a whole day. That being so, they cannot be expecting laving gifts from you on top of that...

Oh, I didn't realise it was a black-tie event. I've no idea in that case and have to agree with Gatica. I think its unfair to ask someone to dress in black-tie just for the afters. I'd opt for a nice suit instead but check with the couple first just in case!

yeah, i'd talk to the best man if i were you - you may arrive at 7pm in your pristine, expensive, get up to discover you're the only man wearing a jacket and tie because everyone else ditched theirs hours ago.

bit of a manners fail for me - expecting a guest to hire a black tie suit just for the reception is pretty inconsiderate. if they are insistant, i'd probably decide that the combination of obviously not being that close to the couple that i wasn't invited to the whole thing, and the bad manners, meant that regretably i'd find myself with other commitments that evening...
