To start off I'm not looking for medical advice. I have been suffering knee problems for the last 2 months since ww200 And I usually did 200-250 weekly for last two years. With regular 100-130 k spins. Does anyone know of any specialist Physio in Dublin who deals with knees ? I've been to 2 physios several times and not helping. Cleats have been relplaced and bike position is fine. Thanks

I'll be watching this with interest! It's not advancing years by any chance?

Currently getting physio for runners knee, even though I dont run.

Symptoms were pain "behind" the knee cap, especially when going downstairs - sound familiar? It's due to outside of quad being stronger than inside, patella gets pulled over too far. Physio and regular exercises to strengthen inner thing seems to be working.

Sounds pretty similar to me I presume it's to build up the thighs to prevent muscle strength imbalance to get everything back to normal

I had knee surgery last year and went to a few physios who tried to rehab me for a sedentary lifestyle, so was still having problems on bike as quads were weak. Have been going to Aidan Woods for a few months now and have been getting great results - lots of gym work involved (3 times/week at moment, initially 5 days) and he's a cyclist which helps:

If it doesn't improve with some physio, ask the doc to refer to you for an MRI. I had knee problems for years, getting worse until my level of physical activity was severely restricted. I had all but given up on the medical profession. I assumed I had arthritis in the knee. Then an additional injury made me so desperate I went back to the doctor, for the first time in over 10 years. The doc sent me for an MRI. Turned out my tissue (particularly the IT band) was so tight it was pulling the patella into the knee and causing pain. Several physio sessions later, lots of foam roller pain and stretching, squats and I was doing stuff I hadn't done in years. Did the W100 earlier this year, have just done the Leinster Loop 120k, and am wondering how far I can push my limits. The MRI gives information on your soft tissue which was just not possible ten years ago.

Kellt, I will hit 50 in the next 18 months, and I'm thinking of doing something challenging to mark it. Maybe I'm just lucky, but as far as I'm concerned, 50 is just the beginning.

I presume he's a relative of the late Joe Daly? (Whose real surname was Tansey, IIRC.)

My MRI only showed a bone bruise, surgeon found a cartilage tear and arthritis. A lot of MRIs don't show anything. I developed ITB syndrome from overtraining after the surgery with weak quads. Same treatment as above. Foam roller hurts like hell but works really well. A good sports massage once a month helps too.

I find filled the anus completely with chewed chewing gum (not peppermint) helps a lot in the comfort stakes when on a long cycle

It's your rectum, not your anus.

    Oh, and you're banned.

I've something similar to this as well this year. One of the knee muscles wasn't strong enough and due to loads of training, the others over compensated. Strangely, I've started running to improve my knees as well as a whole host of other knee exercises and stretches.

As others have said, it can be a long road back but the seemingly irrelevant exercises do actually help.

In same situation here pain behind knee cap. Was doing a lot of leg presses etc with no real resolution anyone in a position to recomend any physios in Galway?

So went to gym today to have assessment. turns out my problem is a large imbalance between v strong quad and weak hamstring which is the most likely cause of the pain. I believe it is common in many cyclists.
    Thanks for all your advices.

    just from my own experiences.....
    1. Even .5cm changes in seat height can make a difference so change slowly. Heard mercx was constantly adjusting his position and think that is good advice as strength/flexibility fluctuates etc.

    2. For rolling is vital but do it very slowly. I used to be a great man for rolling up and down my itb, and instinctively tensing my quads . It want until I rolled cm by cm that I could relax and get proper relief.

    3. This isn't advice but just my experience. The pain may not always go away. Despite doing loads of core, stretches and some strengthening I still get a very low grade ache from cycling/running. By all means go to a physio, but from what I read, not all pain goes and it would be a shame to stop all activity
