I know a lad in a small village in west cork that got 525 points in his lc, He wants to do arts in Nuig but he and his parents have no money only 22cents in the bank, They didnt bother saving any money because they thought the grant would come before college starts but of course it does not come until october. What can and should he do ?

NUIG should have some sort of welfare officer, would be a start emailing or phoning them to see what they can do. Can he find a job anywhere? Any income would be good income, perhaps enough income to make repayments on a loan.

They should also try the st Vincent de Paul

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Many banks offer an interest-free advance of the next grant installment, including BoI in NUIG. It's worth looking into as so many people are in the same boat.

Also, NUIG have relaxed the deadlines around payment of fees (at last) this year so that should afford some relief.

Speak to the college, if you can get a letter form the VEC stating that they will be eligible for the grant but that it won't be issued til Oct then they may hold off until then, colleges are usually fairly good with waiting for the grants to come in.
