Major Engine problem -Noise

My Renault Megane 1.4 16V has got major engine problem. Over last week or two, engine noise is present, car has stalled shortly after start up and engine has less power. Mechanic says engine is gone, that either Hydralic torrets or cam-shaft gone. If you rev engine when parked you can hear engine sound s off very clearly now.

Car is 2001 with 78,000 miles done. Gave no problems at all before this. Changed timing belt at 70,000 miles a few months ago and am bit worried this could have been cause of problem. Otherwise could not changing oil be the issue. No dash lights ever came on, oil was at correct level but bit dirty and could have be changed a few weeks ago if honest.

mechanic says no way of knowing how long car will keep going for. Is trying to fix issue, replace engine etc not worth it when value of car is prob only 1500euro to 2000euro. DO you think any garages would take it as trade in and give me reasonable bit of cash? Thanks

Car is only worth 700-1000 working perfectly.
