Agreed I was and still am a huge Verve fan, Northern soul was an epic album. Slide away is another favourite of mine.

Someone gave me Urban Hymns as a present when it came out.

I tried but I could never listen to it the whole way through.

    Dull band.

I loved A Northern Soul and Urban Hymns. They were a great band at the time. Didn't bother with their newer album though. Heard it was fairly unimpressive.

Their debut A Storm In Heaven is the only album I can listen to these days, it was pretty damn solid actually despite being overlooked. Urban Hymns sounds poor nowadays.

    This song is great

    And my point is?

Yeah great Joy Division based intro to this track - Have to agree with others generally that earlier albums were best work. Urban Hymns hasn't dated though some really great songs on that !!

2nd album I ever bought with mine own money was Urban Hymns Instantly fell in love with it!

Love is Noise is a great track too!

What a band, never got to see them live which I regret! Nick McCabe is a terribly underrated guitar player.

Nick McCabe and Simon Jones are in a new band called The Black Ships. You can download a free EP from their website; http://www.theblackships.com/music.html

No idea what Ashcroft is doing though!

I thought their last album Forth was pretty good, it had the psychadelic feel of their earlier albums and apart from a couple of tracks it wasn't as radio friendly as Urban Hymns but it's well worth a listen.

Richard Ashcroft had an album out last year called The United Nations of Sound which was hit and miss with a couple of very good tracks on it.

It was an alright album, a couple of good songs on it as you said.

He hasn't done much since but I found this on Youtube.
Its a song called 'Screw You,Screw Me' which was only made available a few weeks ago. Great tune!

Great band. Ashcroft never came close with his solo stuff.

I dont know how many would be in this category, but I quite liked his solo stuff. Was very different from The Verve and he wasn't even trying to do Verve-type stuff anyway.

Lot of soulful tracks with some great melodies behind them. His solo stuff is very underrated IMO.

I liked "Human Conditions" even though it wasn't very well received.

Don't get me wrong, I like a lot of his solo stuff, but I don't think he ever came close to the brilliance of The Verve. Wasn't too keen on the United Nations.. album though.

    He's a cool f*cker.
