    Hi

just got my E90 back from the garage today after 7 weeks, had to get the ecu repaired, apparently it just melted! the mechanic told me she's running sweet as a nut but that the fan comes on after starting and stays running until you stop the car again.

the mechanic told me it was a problem with the fan and that if i replace it, that'll fix it. i find that hard to believe though as surely the car controls the power going to the fan.

anyone have a similar problem? is it the fan?

the fault code on the dash is cc-id 206

    any advice be great

the fan is activated by a thermostat so maybe start with that? I assume you've no engine temp sensor in the E90?

The fan on an e90 is ecu controlled so there may still be some issue.

Is he sure the AC isn't on? The fan will be running if the AC is on.

well there is no cold air coming into the car that make me think the air con is on. is there any check i can do?

correct, there is no temp display on the dash. bit of a balls after giving them 800e and its still not right!

The first thing your mechanic should be doing is reading the recorded coolant temperature from the ecu using diagnostic equipment. He can then determine if the ecu is getting the correct temperature signal and is giving out the correct signal to the fan.

i ask him when i collected it and he said that the ecu wasn't showing any error and it was reading the correct temp. the ecu that got repaired was the one for the injection system. he said there is 2 of them, one for cylinders 1 and 4 and another for 2 and 3. so i don't think that the ecu repaired is related to this problem as there is probably another system for controlling the fan, but i could be wrong on this

A car only has one main ecu and, on modern cars, all engine systems run through it.

It would be interesting to know what has actually been replaced on your car to know if the fan issue could be related.

looks like i'll be bringing it back to him so. might as well get value for money

sounds like your mechanic does not know what he is talking about

I presume there is some sort of variable speed fan like the e46 with a controller on the fan itself. I'd imagine if the fan can't see the main ecu it will fail safe and continue to run once power is applied. Could be a loose connection to the fan controller.

If he has decent diag equipment he should be able to see what speed the fan is being requested to spin at, if at all...

Diesel injection services in cashel had the ecu repaired by a third party. i'm told they are very good at what they do. looks like i'm going to have to bring it back to him. the fan wasn't running like this before the ecu went so it has to be related.
