Shop Manners

I don't know am I alone on this but sometimes I find people really rude serving in shops, some, not all. And yes I worked in a shop myself and we were always told to be mannerly. So today I was visiting my parents and went to their local shop, the owner has all seemed a sour sort but honestly he was downright rude today. Do I just refuse to go there or would anyone here ever say anything? My eldest was smiling up and him and continually saying, 'hi,' in a cute way. He just seemed rude to him and me in truth. Didn't make eye contact and threw the change at me. The students working there all seem lovely though. Do some people not realise how important it is to make an effort?

Being someone who has worked in retail for years I always go out of my way to be polite and friendly with all if my customers. Especially if they are nice to me.
Playing devils advocate here for a second but some customers can be obnoxious and downright rude also. Manners while shopping is applicable to both sides of the counter IMO.

IMHO it's Galway shoppers who are far more rude that the people serving them. /

I'm really only talking about one individual here, he seems a right piece of work, just mentioned him to my mother and she said he's known for his lack of manners. Right, I won't change him so!

Galway -> Ah for general manners discussion

So OP, when he threw did the change at you, did he hit you in the face? Or did the change fly past and hit the wall?

Tell him you're a mod on Boards and see how quickly he'll change his attitude. He'll be giving out free lollies for you son before you know it!

The foreign workers are noticeably cheerier in shops and they seem to be more helpful too.

Maybe the poor lad had just found out he's infertile and your adorable little sprog just reminded him of how empty his life will be when he gets older and sits wasting away in a nursing home with no children to visit or take care of him.

Or maybe your kid isn't as cute to other people as it is to you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 337 ✭✭CavanCrew

Ive worked in retail before, not near as bad as other jobs.
The staff in Brown Thomas are the worst.
Well not all, but a lot are pure snobs, treat you like you are not worthy of their time, Sorry love, but look at what side of the counter you are on...

That's a bit of a generalisation now in fairness. I've worked with a good few non-irish people over the years and trust me they can be just as rude as Irish shop assistants.

OP sometimes people are just dicks. He might have been having an off day. The next time you go in he could be as nice as pie.

I wouldn't make a judgement on him from just one visit.

Probably a peado just trying to keep it together.
"keep it together"...... "keep it together"........."keep it together".
Probably pulled the stomach outta himself the moment ye left.

Yeah just avoid going there if you can, and if this shop comes up in conversation with your family/friends/locals then mention that they're really rude in that shop. A shop near me has managed to build up a bad rep over the years because they're rude. A lot less people go there and they do rubbish business compared to what they would if they had a better reputation.

Maybe a loved one of his is dying of cancer, maybe his wife is sleeping with his Brother, maybe he's suffering with crippling depression.. maybe it's all he can do not to fall to pieces infront of you and your cute eldest and he'd be gone the fcuk out of there if he didn't count desperately on every rusty cent that passes through the til?

Or he could just be a cnut.

i would worry about it. customer service is a huge thing imo. i have worked behind the counter and still do in a sense as i am the first person the customer to my company speaks to (by telephone). having a friendly, aproachable, helpful shop/business assistant makes all the difference to me as to whether i will return to that business again or not. we all have our off days and we all have our difficult customers but i think that a retail outlet service should begin with the staff. a few years ago i was fortunate enough to take a trip to new york. i found that everyone i met in the retail business were very friendly and very helpful. the first complaint i had on our trip was when i arrived back in shannon and i found the staff rude. sorry to say but i knew i was back in ireland when i experienced the way staff treat customers. ireland in general need to wake up to this problem. we depend so much on tourism in this country, i think it is time we learnt a bit about hospitality.

Nothing to do with the fact that you can download a movie for free then.

    ;)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 894 ✭✭✭filmbuffboy

in fairness Ive always found xtra vision staff to be very unhelpful. Its just karma that downloading became the norm! no more paying 5 or 6 euro to rent a film when you can download it at home no hassle!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 174 ✭✭VenusPlays

Xtra vision staff in my local shop have always been really nice. But last time I was in there was a guy from another shop covering and he was super nice. Gave me free popcorn :)

Local shop staff have gone down hill though, some of them make no eye contact, talk to each other while never acknowledging your presence and just keep scanning things in and only remember you are there when they want paying. I've also been in a shop recently where the girl behind the till was on her mobile the entire time.

I don't tolerate been treated badly by anyone. If I find someone is rude I'll spend my money elsewhere.

Yeah same here, and I usually make sure to tell others about how bad the service is in a particular place too

Everyone who's worked in retail (myself included) were always told that you leave your personal problems at the door before you start work. I know that can be hard but you're there to provide a service.

I work on the phones mostly dealing with complaints and I get some terrible customers screaming at me and calling me names. Most make me angry and I'll have to take a call almost immediately after they've left. But I have to take a deep breath and be pleasant with the next customer. They don't know the caller before them was a pr1ck.

I think the only way to deal with this whole fiasco is to top yourself OP. Unfortunately it's the only choice you are left with at this point in time. An emotionally traumatic experience such as the one you've described is one so monumental that you will never be able to overcome it.

    Good luck.

Really? You must have had a **** of a boss. Where I work (huge clothing department store) there is no way i'd take any crap like that. Retail staff are humans not robots.

Its amazing how many people expect retail staff to smile at them. If I smiled at every customer for a 9 hour shift i'd probably get muscle spasms in my cheek.

People also realise that staff have other stuff going on in their lives. A friend of mine was recently accused of no being 'cheery' because he had just attended his fathers funeral two days earlier.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,846 ✭✭✭Fromthetrees

It's not personal if the person doesn't smile and greet you with open arms, you bought what you wanted, got the right change, he didn't abuse you in anyway, if a person isn't friendly or is in a bad mood that's that, what does it matter, I'd prefer a real person to say nothing than a fake hi how are you doing sir, it means nothing to you, well it shouldn't.

Cause your the only person to say that to me today:rolleyes:

it gets reallyyyyyy hard to fake a laugh during a ten hour shift

and seriously, your friend was expected to act as if he hadnt just buried his father? ffs, its crazy, im all about being polite, but dont expect me to be cheery non stop.

oh Defo!!! At times you just want to remind them that they are working there and you are shopping! I never could understand BT staff mentality they feel like the customrs are there so serve them...

On the point OP was making... One of my local newsagents is owned by a pakistani family they all are quite unplesant and unfriendly but the father (the owner) is the worst so rude and ignorant I just stoped going there all together, luky for me there plenty newsagents near my house. The last time I went to that shop I was at the counter paying I stretched my hand towards him I had cash and card in the hand he only noticed the card and practically screamed at me: I told you yesterday cards for purchases of 10 euro and over! Stop wasting my time!... Then he notices cash in my hand and proceeds to try and take it without even offering an appology! I just told him to f*ck off and walked out never to return again...

I work in a shop and there is one kid working there who thinks she's better than everyone. Never ever a please or thank you out of her or a smile or anything. I'm always saying it to her and she just completely ignores me, shur what do I know I only work in a shop :P

Customers can be absolute pains in the hole but I love people and I do think a smile goes a long way.

My boss constantly belittles me on front of customers and I know a lot of people who won't come into the shop because of her attitide.

Probably trying to count your change and your child kept interrupting him
with "HI, HI, HI, HI, HI, HI, HI!!" Nothing more annoying than a constantly annoying child looking for attention when you're trying to concentrate on something.

I'd say his concentration was to give you the right change cos it would be taken out of his wages if he messed it up.

You're child may be cute to you, but a source of annoyance and interruption for others. It's why they don't have "bring your child to work day" every week, too many cock ups made trying to multi task.

most i have come across were friendly enough, however i find in a lot of the centra/spar shops that the hygiene levels of the staff (irish or foreign) is really bad, dirty hands and nails etc.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 580 ✭✭✭IPushButtons

Heres my attitude towards rude staff at any shop, I win they loose. So when i go in to a shop im always very polite to the staff because they work bum jobs and generally earn crap money with unsocial hours to boot, an example, i went into the local tesco to get some groceries and at the check out i said hello to the cashier and asked him how hes day was going. He was totally rude and obnoxious but i left happy because of the fact that i could leave something the cashier could not do hes trapped in a bum job and im not so i guess im just thankful, and if the staff want to be ****s, let them be ****s im not gonna let it affect my life, not one bit cos they don't matter to me.

Don't get me wrong here i won't shop there and if i do out of necessity ill use the self service checkouts, something that will put his job at risk.
