TV3 Group to provide exclusive coverage of minor finals live from Croke Park

Seán Óg Ó hAilpín to co-commentate on minor hurling final

In a first for Irish broadcasting, TV3 and 3e will offer viewers the choice of language in which to watch the All-Ireland Hurling and Football Minor Finals. In keeping with tradition, commentary on 3e will be broadcast as Gaeilge while commentary on TV3 will be broadcast in English.

On September 4th, Matt Cooper will present the All-Ireland Minor Hurling Final programme and will be joined by Liam Griffin, Jamesie O'Connor and Daithí Regan. On 3e, the commentary as Gaeilge will be provided by Marcus Ó Buachalla, and Cork hurling all-star Seán Óg Ó hAilpín will be making his debut in the commentary box. Seán Walsh and Joe Dean will be commentating on TV3 in English.

On September 18th, TV3 will return to Croke Park to showcase the All-Ireland Minor Football Final and Matt will be back in studio along with Peter Canavan, Senan Connell and Liam Hayes. Once again, 3e will be providing the commentary as Gaeilge with Marcus Ó Buachalla and Seán Óg De Paor. Mike Finnerty and Paul Earley will be in the commentary box for English language coverage on TV3.

3e is now Ireland’s Number 1 digital channel with 95% national coverage on the new digital terrestrial network, Saorview. 3e is also available nationally on UPC channel 106 and Sky channel 105.

TV3 Group Commercial Director, Pat Kiely said: "TV3 Group is set to cover the All-Ireland Minor Finals like never before. We will not only offer the most comprehensive coverage ever given to these matches but, for the first time, offer a choice of commentary across our two channels. Watching the “Minor” in Irish is a tradition we are delighted to honour and offer as an option to all our viewers. We look forward to being in Croke Park on the two biggest Sundays of the year as we continue to extend our coverage of Gaelic Games".

Could they not just use a 2nd audio soundtrack on TV3?

None of which will be in HD of course.

Presumably because the GAA stipulated this when they gave TV3 permission to broadcast the match.

Think about it lads..... 3e, RTEjr, RTE News Now, RTE1+1, Setanta Ireland, and Setanta 1 are Irelands only "Digital Only" channels!!!

3e is on analogue cable isn't it?

It certainly is. Going by their logic RTÉ One is a digital channel too.

3E has a higher audience to Sky One e.g. it now has 1.5 to 1.9% audience share.

    As indeed is Setanta Ireland.

TV3 are probably only doing this to make a point with the GAA who were probably reluctant to have the Irish commentary dropped. Once the ratings come in and it is shown that somewhere between few and none have watched on 3e, they will no doubt discontinue the Irish commentary for future years.

To be honest, broadcasting what is after all an under-age match on two channels simultaniously is a bit of overkill IMO. I don't see any underage football or rugby tournaments getting the same treatment.

It is strange because RTÉ provided live coverage of the semi finals as Gealige ??? . I think the GAA might see the viewing figures on TV3 lower then those on RTÉ Á Dó and reconsider TV3's coverage of the games. If 3e was in English and TV3 was in Irish TV3 would still get a larger audience, because TV3 is better known then its younger sister channel.

I believe that 3e is the most watch pay for TV channel in Ireland, how does that suit.

I think a repeat of Ireland AM on 3e is a bit of overkill, and to think in a year it will get 3 broadcasts!

The number one Digital Only channel is RTE 2 HD. It is the only channel that is broadcasting (sometimes) in HD, and has higher viewing figures than any other Digital Only channels.

3E does not qualify as it is broadcast on analogue on UPC.

Brilliant! Even without knowing the viewing figures of RTÉ Two HD it remains the most popular Irish Digital only service, could even be said for RTÉjr and RTÉ News Now. Oh! and don't forget RTÉ 1 +1.

Rte 1+1 and RTE jr are both part time channels and so cannot have high viewing figures, and both feature blank screens for a lot of their broadcasting times. [RTE jr at weekends and RTE 1+1 when they do not show programmes that are barred]. So that leaves only RTE NN and RTE 2 HD. I would hazard a guess the RTE 2 HD wins every time.

You should work for TV3, they could do with someone who knows hot to make non-statistics look good :)

    I do not think so.

However, the Late Late suffered a loss of 160,000 viewers because of the match on RTE 2 (and RTE 2 HD) so someone was watching RTE 2, and I presume a few were watching RTE 2 HD.

Of course, it would help if there were statistics for Saorview, but given RTE's apparent choice to ignore its very existence, I am not surprised that there are none.

Don't really care who is the "Number 1" channel tbh.

I was annoyed that TV3 showed the game with English commentary. Minor games were always done in Irish and they should continue that way.
It's our language and Minor All-Irelands are probably the only way some people are exposed to it so I think it's terrible that TV3 broadcasted in English.

Hope the football is back on RTE in Irish.

For what its worth, I'd imagine the most viewed digital-only channel is probably either Setanta Sports 1 or City Channel. Right now either of their penetration is a lot bigger than RTÉ Two HD's.

As for the All-Ireland Minor Hurling Final - there was really no logical reason for it to be in Irish other than "tradition".

Lol love the non-stats, as neither city channel or ss1 are part of the full neilsens ratings.

What's wrong with tradition? 3e has to have some pbs remit now its on saorview.

How many subscribers does Setanta Sports 1 actually have?

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,072 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

I'd love to know, Setanta will only describe them as "steady"

    http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/finance/2011/0701/1224299837529.html

City Channel is available to all UPC Digital subscribers has a reach of about 370,000 homes or thereabouts. Now whether there is anything worth watching on it, is any question. Nonetheless (and its only a guess in the absence of actual numbers of houses with Saorview installed) I'd imagine in it is available in more households than RTÉ Two HD.

I can only repeat my straw poll of people I personally know - of those that live in the greater Dublin area, I don't know any that have Saorview installed, on even a portable. The vast majority have UPC. Those that don't (a small minority) have Sky. That's completely unscientific, of course, but it underlines the need for RTÉ Two HD to get on UPC. That's an argument for another forum.

If it was only in Irish, then even less people would watch it, a bit like TG4. There are a lot of people living in Ireland who cannot speak one word of Irish, its not the 1960's you know.

Thats because its an Irish language channel, other than most of the movies and adverts etc etc.

TG4 has support many sports and they all rate well.

It would be higher if in english and irish though, there are more english speakers than irish here. But then they wouldn't get the licence as it is supposed to be an irish language channel

RTE 2 get similar audiences as tg4 for celtic league. Tg4 get nearly 400000 viewers for league gealic football and between 70000 to 150000 for ladies football.

Tg4 get grant in aid they do not receive the licence fee.

I can't see there being 400k viewers who can speak the mother tongue however, no comment on the ladies

I didn't say that they did my point was that language and live sport may not be audience getters or loosers.

ladies football has a high audience for both a minoity sport and language, which covers the public service aspects of tg4 well.
