    Hi

Complete pc novice here so go easy on me.

I have a 6 year old siemens fujitsu laptop. Amilo li 1705. Its a basic 1gb machine but has served me well.

The pc is mostly used for home accounting, photos facebook and itunes.

So over the past year its been running slower and slower. then the other evening the screen became impossible to see - like the light went out in the screen. So I powered off the machine and powered back on a few times and eventually the screen lit up with a blue screen with messages and then turned off again almost immediately.

So being a novice, I googled on my phone to see what it might be.

I powered off the laptop, took out the battery, left it out for half hour or so, held down the power button for a while and tried to start up the machine.

There are a serious of lights on the keyboard. when i power on the laoptop, two lights come on immediately - power and what looks like antenna (i assume wifi). I can hear the fan on.

Any ideas what might be up? local IT company asking €80 to have a look. but if you think the laptop has just exhausted itself and is finished, i'd rather look at investing the yoyos in a new one. spec on my old one was poor anyway.

    Any advice or ideas?

    Cheers
    me

If you have to get someone to reair it, it may not be worthwhile. However, it would be a great opportunity to give it a go at fixing it yourself.

Post up the exact problems here (i knew you have posted the causes but they are still a little vague). It sounds like the hard drive may be gone, but it could be a coulple of other things as well.

    hi wobbles

not sure what else to say.

i can power up pc from mains, hear fan, two lights come on on laptop case but screen either doesn't come / doesn't light up.

Can you be a bit more specific about what to say? I'd be happy to try a home fix.

When you turn on the laptop if you shine a light on the screen can you see a feint image (if so the backlight might be gone).

Try to connect the laptop to an external monitor and boot it.

Do you get anything on the monitor.

    Probably because it was overheating.
    There is three possibilities:
    1- CPU is dead
    2- northbridge is dead or
3- because of overheating northbrige "stick out" of the mainboard.

Strip your laptop and check space between fan and radiator. You might find there carpet of dust. If you need CPU to swap and check, just let me know.
