    .... A Diesel convert!

    Been driving a Diesel now for the last year or so now and last week i had to drive a petrol car for a few nights after mine was broken into, couldnt get over how much ya have to pay for so little petrol! Felt like i was pouring air into the tank!!

    Couldnt go back to driving petrols, i'm a daysul convert and proud!!

    I wouldnt drive a run of the mill petrol either, but try driving a fun petrol and say that.

    I'm still not convienced.

    I recently got Mazda 6 2.0 petrol.
    It takes about 8.5 l/100km on average, which assuming 1.5 per litre of petrol returns 12.75 euro per 100km.

    If I got diesel, it would probably burn about 6.5 l/100km which at current price 1.42 would give 9.23 euro per 100km.

    Car does around 25k kms yearly, so petrol costs will be about 3187.5, while diesel costs would be about 2307.5
    That makes 880 euros difference per year.

    Now assuming how much more problems you might get with diesels and how much it costs to fix them, I assume it would be just about the same - much more pleasure to drive petrol though, and no problems in severe winter (temperatures under -15 degrees) with freezing fuel.

    I've been pleasantly surprised at how frugal my recent 2.2lt petrol bangernomics skip has been in relation to my E46 320d. :)

    As a work tool diesel is the job I have to say. Cheap to run and gives it's punch right where you need it at low revs which is ideal for day to day driving. I'm doing big mileage and I'm sorry I didn't change sooner. I have 34k km on mine in 6 months and I worked out the savings compared to my old car on similar driving and it's close on 2k already.

    EDIT - Before someone says you've saved €2k but how much did it cost to change I was changing my car wether or which because I wanted to.

    However, no matter how much sound deadening they put in it still sounds like a bag of spanners, takes a bit to get going and once you go over 4k revs it shuts up shop and goes on holidays.

    Your point? If you change up at that point you'll just be met by lag in the higher gear.

    My current diesel car (Subaru) is quieter and smoother than my old petrol (Mazda 6 1.8). Make of that what you will...

    The boxers are very smooth by diesel standards though. Although VAG diesels are pretty rough anyway, even the common rail ones.

    BMW diesels are nice and linear and pull hard right up to the red line. But they still don't have a patch on a good petrol, though.

    Yep, probably due to the 6spd gearbox and good engine. Of course with a fairly heavy foot it could drink petrol like hell but for most of the day it took max 8litres in heavy traffic.

    In all fairness friends of mine have gone from petrol to diesel in relatively high powered cars, e.g. 535d and are very happy with them. Like any piece of machinery, the more parts you have the more there is to go wrong. Gimme a big lazy N/A V8 any day over a 4/6 pot turbo, be it petrol or diesel.

    Thats true. I will always have a diesel as my main car because I am stuck in lorries and transport so it costs me fek all. I dont know will I ever afford the likes of another A8 or something like it.

    I am going to get a V8 petrol at some stage though in bangeromics territory.

    I'm sure you saw Voodoo's recent thread on running costs. It costs me the same to run an E38 as it would do to run an '06 1.4 Golf. I know where I would rather be! :)

    I would have thought that a diesel would have done better then 44mpg tbh. Also you are not doing enough mileage to justify a diesel. If you were doing more then there would be a greater saving.

    Unmodified Cali turbos are extremely efficient cars if maintaned well. Trust me, owned two of them. Even the one with 310+bhp could make 8l/100km if not pushed hard.;)

    How realistic is it to own one and run one of those?
    Any major pitfalls?

    So you have a light foot than, Greyfoot? 45MPG in a 2l petrol. I think if you look down you'll find you have no foot at all :D
