we have the short maths test 2!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 79 ✭✭yoozername

Yep, my girlfriend got a call just there too - she was asked to come in on Monday "for further discussion" - were you told the same thing, or were you called in "for an interview"?

There was no mention of the maths test.......

Don't want to analyse it too much, but just wondering...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39 ladymolly

im pretty sure she said interview but she did say it was ver informal and short!she did tell me about a short maths test !der is sample papers on the website and its only 4questions!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39 ladymolly

I was confused about a maths test 2 because when I phoned the other day they said there was not a maths test!but the phone call this morning i was told of a short one!

hmm... that's a bit worrying... why wouldn't she have mentioned the maths test...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39 ladymolly

i dunno to be honest, when i first applied in june i was sent a little slip of paper telling me about the interview on the 24th and to look at my level of maths on the website?

im starting to doubt myself now 2,i was excited when I got the call ha ha

I just got a call there too. Asked to come in for an 'interview'. No mention of a maths test either but I'd imagine she's assuming people know about it from the website.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 79 ✭✭yoozername

Thanks for that, at least she wasn't the only one not told about the maths.

I wonder do they get you to come back in even they have bad news for you?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 217 ✭✭Cameron Poe

I doubt it. I tried to get the day changed as I'll be working. They couldn't do it so I'll have to miss a day. I won't be happy if it's just to be let down.

they couldnt possibly call you in to tell you you didnt get a place!its a bit of a waste of time really and colleges are pretty busy around this time of year organising all the students etc!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 79 ✭✭yoozername

    Fair points!

I'll have to make sure she brushes up on her maths so!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39 ladymolly

she cant print off the sample papers online,at least its not until monday.:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 79 ✭✭yoozername

Yep, but I wondered why they don't give the answers to the sample questions?

I know they're fairly simple, but they're obviously designed to trip you up, with the brackets all over the place. Seems like giving the answers would be helpful...

If you're unsure on whether you have to do the Maths test, give Thomond a call or mail just to clarify for yourselves. I'd imagine that the test won't deviate from the examples on the website. So it's a case of practising them. If you look on line, there will be examples of how to do them or get your Maths books back out!!

The interview is very informal. They just want to make sure you are aware of the class hours, and that you can commit to the course.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39 ladymolly

i just got a lend of a maths book there so im just going to keep practising them really.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,457 ✭✭✭Lenmeister

I received a call to come in for an interview and Maths test. God if the questions are similar to the ones on the site then I've no chance, very long time since I done anything like that, I've not got a clue! Still, good luck to everyone, hope you get on well.

    hey all,

how did everyone find the interview and maths test?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,457 ✭✭✭Lenmeister

Ugg terrible, I'd be surprised if I even got a grade :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39 ladymolly

ye im feeling the same myself!I thought it was a bit unfair the pre tests online where nothing like the test we had today!did they tell you when you would hear back?I forgot to ask!?

Aye by the latest friday. Though they kept saying it was just to gauge our subject knowledge as of this moment, I'm not so sure it applies to everyone. I'm thinking if I done that badly I won't get a call back at all. Though I could be very wrong, won't know for a few days I guess!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 217 ✭✭Cameron Poe

Thought it was a bit unfair not to have any of the sample questions on the actual test bar one. I struggled with the maths.

Thought the interview went ok but it's always easy to be negative about interviews. They only seemed to be looking for people that actually wanted to do the course so i'm sure everyone here will be fine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 79 ✭✭yoozername

Same here, my girlfriend was very unhappy that the actual paper was so far removed from the samples on the website. Why did they have 2 more or less identical sample papers on the site, then present a completely different one for the actual test? Doesn't seem to make much sense.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,457 ✭✭✭Lenmeister

They did say it was just to see where we are in terms of ability in maths, but that it is not for grading and basing whether you get onto the course or not. Personally I've nothing against whether the questions are astrophysics or 1+1. I'm sure most will be fine, either way we'll find out before the weekend.

She got a call back, she's going to UCD :) I hope it's good news for everyone else too!

I got a call back Friday, was offered a place ^^ looking forward to it too! See you the 19th! Though she said I'd have to catch up on my maths and get 2 books, one for Leaving Cert and one for Junior Cert :( either way I'll get the head down.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,954 ✭✭✭✭Larianne

Try not to worry about the Maths. They have a great Maths tutor who goes through all the steps of working out the sums. It will become easy, once you know how!

Also, there is a Maths Support Centre in UCD. It's a drop-in centre and they have certain times when its specifically for people on the Access course. So you will have a lot of help if you need it.

The internet has many MathsHelp forums so check them out too! :)

Have you been told anymore bout the course cos wen I got the call my coverage wasn great and I didn't know whether u had to email her bout the course content or something?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,457 ✭✭✭Lenmeister

Sorry for the late reply, all the course content you need is on the actual UCD Access to Science page. There's a link you can click on and you can download the course content but I can't seem to find it. I received an email from Thomond containing everything so you should have received one too. It states starting dates and day/times, aswell as what books to get etc.

Oh and as for the riddle - Apparently the answer is 2. That's what I thought at 1st but the more I dive into it the more I disagree! I'll have to barrage the Doc with questions when we start!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39 ladymolly

you cant get back to eduaction doing a part time course supposedly !They dont give any grants to part time either i went to a lecture on student grants and they dont any support for them anymore

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,457 ✭✭✭Lenmeister

What about dole, can you still be claiming dole or even just for the days that you do the course? I was in the social yesterday and was told to fill out the BTEA anyway. So maybe there is something you can get, I've to drop it all in Monday morning anyway, late but sure I had no other choice.

I'm on the dole myself at the moment,u can stay on it while your in the course but I still have to be trying to get a job which I am!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,457 ✭✭✭Lenmeister

Yeah I'm in the same position, so it's actually pretty much pointless in applying for btea or anything like that since the dole is our support for the course?

Ye I guess so but sure send in the btea anyway ya never know at least they will know your doing a course at least, I think they will be a bit more accommodating and won't be on your back as much to get a job etc!

Yeah I was thinking the same thing, sure I'll try that. Anyway too much great sport on today and tomorrow to be worrying about such things!

I attended the lecture on the wednesday evening in UCD as i was leaving for my hols and 5 am the next day i was a bit muddled so my lecture notes were not the best. while i was away i had a call asking me to attend an interview which i obviously could not as i was away, i emailed UCD in a panic explaining this but they could not accomodate me with an interview after the date said so i didnt get a place. im so annoyed. im trying to obtain a place on the climate and earth science course three years now :( and for anyone wanting info on the BTEA its the full rate of 186.00 you will not have to sign on and u can opt to have your payment transferred into your bank account weekly. good luck to everyone in their course.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,457 ✭✭✭Lenmeister

Not trying to sound harsh, but if you've been trying the last 3 years why didn't you make sure your holidays were not around this time? People will drop out anyway so you still might be able to make it onto the course. Ye never know. Keep emailing them saying you really wanted it and if a place pops up within the next few weeks you might be in with a shout!
