Trinity College Accomodation?

Okay so i'm from Northern Ireland and I got accepted to Trinity College. I filled out that personal statement when I applied for accommodation but really worried I won't get accepted because I don't know anyone in Dublin and i'll have nowhere to live...also I'm 3 hours away so too far to commute...

Do many first years get rejected from halls? Here's what I wrote do you think it's good enough?

"I consider myself to be a friendly, intelligent and fun-loving individual with a great sense of humour and excellent social skills. Following completion of 4 A-levels, one of which I achieved without tuition while holding down a part time job and remaining involved in extra-curricular activities, I have realised my dream of a place at Trinity College. My voluntary experience in a local youth club for 2 years and position on the local Youth Council during my senior school years demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills which, along with my job and involvement in school life show my extrovert personality and ability to get along with other people of all ages and backgrounds. My hobbies include music and the arts, evidenced by my school membership of the Senior Choir, orchestra and string group, and violin and piano tuition during the full length of my school career. I undertook the integral part of the producer’s Personal Assistant in 3 school productions for which I received an award for ‘Best Offstage Contribution’, and secured a place in the cast for the school production of ‘Joseph’. For these contributions to the music and drama departments of my school, I was presented with school honours. I believe this demonstrates outstanding social, motivational and organisational skills and a thorough engagement in the school community. During my spare time I also enjoy reading, socialising, current affairs, and both the listening and performance of music. I travel to Spain twice a year, where I have friends and family, showing my interest in both language and culture. I consider myself deserving of a place at Trinity Hall because I have many skills and experiences to contribute, and I believe I will integrate well with the ethos and opportunities that it has to offer."

Please help me out thanks! Oh and I applied for sharing...does that help?

Crap now I feel terrible! Lol what kind of thing did you write? I feel like I just rambled about myself and my achievements and didn't actually tell them why I wanted to stay there...which is probably what I'm supposed to have done...so yours is probably much better than mine!

Hey I'm in the exact same boat. My statement was just short and sweet, i just said i wanted to meet new people and listed a few hobbies.
I think the statement is only so you are put in the same kind of accommodation as people with the same interests as you though, i'm not sure it matters an awful lot. We should have a good chance since we're from the north.
And yeah i hear that choosing sharing gives you a better chance :D can't say for certain though, i've just been researching a lot :)

    No yours is better.

    NO yours is BETTER!

    NO YOURS IS BETTER!!!

    (etc ad nauseum)
I only wrote a short bit about my interests and why I wanted to go, saying I wanted the (cringe) 'Hall's experience', that sort of stuff. Think yours looks good though, and going for a shared room nearly guarantees it apparently

I sort of left all that out  but hopefully not many people get rejected and we'll all be okay!

I'm really worried now, my application only went through about an hour ago because my bank account was empty :P Am I completely at a disadvantage now because applications were supposed to be before 5PM today?

Don't worry yourself honey, you're still at an advantage because you don't live in the Pale. If I were you I would ring the admissions tomorrow and explain your situation. But I think what they meant by people finding out by Tuesday morning if they applied before 5PM today was just that people who apply after that will probably not find out by Tuesday. Bear in mind that people who don't receive offers until 2nd round will still need to apply and that will be long after you did! I rang Trinity when I applied and they said it wasn't on a first come first serve basis anyway. :)

I hope so! The website says that a few offers are also made in September, but I'd like to get accommodation sorted ASAP :) Fingers crossed I get it because I don't know anyone doing the same kind of course:)

Oh and also, if its any consolation, heres another person who doenst know much about dublin or too many people going to trinity and just praying t'god that they get into halls! :)

I think halls are available from Saturday 17th September and if you move in before that there's an extra charge. But don't quote me on it, I think it's on the tcd website. I assumed they sent you your room number when they told you if you got in or not but I don't think you find out who you're sharing with until you get there! Look forward to meeting you, what are you doing?

It'd be nice if you could have a meet up before moving in with the people in your dorm, an pre-ice breaker ice breaker! Actually that's probably overdoing it in the awkwardness prevention stakes...

It's odds on you'll all get in. Last year everyone who applied got in and there were even empty places. People can't afford it any more, that's why they're shipping all the post grads out there.

You get an email telling you your apartment and room number. :)
As for sharing, I don't think they tell you, a guy I was living with last year didn't know how he was sharing with until they actually met. :pac:

Wait, did you mean sharing as in living with or sleeping in the same room as?
Either way you don't find out until you go up, all part of the surprise. ;)

Also, I'm a second year in house 83 if anyone else is as well? :P

Also if you're not on the first list, don't worry. Apply to be on the waiting list and you'll probably still get in, you'll just have to wait a while is all.

I thought that the statement doesn't impact on whether you get in or not, just who you get housed with. Getting in depends on how far away you live from the college. Am I wrong?

Noone seems to know :/ the site is pretty vague. I'd say you're right, but don't count on it.

I know a few people who have said that it really is a first come first serve basis and that the statement isn't as important as it is made out but I found this (I know it's long but it seems to be the official outlines:

"Hall is a very popular choice for incoming students and the number of applicants is usually greater than the number of places available. Applicants are advised that the criteria used in allocating rooms is not first come first served. Rather rooms are allocated on the basis of creating a vibrant academic community which reflects the wider composition of the student body. You are therefore reminded to make a serious attempt at filling out the application form. This information will be used to rank applicants and place successful applicants in apartments during allocation process."

    And this:

"Since the process of room allocation is competitive, students should submit as full an application as possible in the first instance. There are no fixed criteria for the allocation of rooms. In allocating rooms, the objective is to create a vibrant community, in accordance with the College’s Strategic Plan. To this end, contribution to College life through clubs and societies and to the wider community will be taken into account. Where individual applications are of equal merit, random selection will be used to allocate places. Any canvassing will disqualify an application. The application process requires acceptance of the Conditions of Occupancy.

In order to give as many students as possible the experience of living on campus, students are unlikely to be allocated a place on campus for more than one year (unless they are Scholars). Allocations in previous years indicate that there is about a 60% success rate in the first round. Unsuccessful applicants in the first rounds can request to go on a waiting list which may result in a subsequent allocation of a room."

What did ye all put on the forms for when it said which type of accomodation you would prefer..?I put modern apartments but then I ticked the box saying I'd be happy with anything but what else is there??
I'm an absolute ball of stress feel like i did it all wrong:(

And what part of that suggests that it's first-come first-server.
I know of people who applied before me who didn't get in. I know of people who applied in pretty much the first week of term (boardsie actually) and got in!

Also, Apparently living on campus before degrades your chances, but I don't believe that.
    for me:
    first year -halls
    second year-halls
    Third year-Campus.
And I damn well intend on being on campus again next year!

You need permission to miss the first day. I'd advise you to move in the same time as everyone else though, as you get to meet more people.
FIrst years can be offered anything in Halls.

Time to change the flight. There's no way I'm missing time when I'm meant to be there.

Just another ques. Do we need to bring kitchen things?

Make sure and let then know when you get the offer, theyre usually fine about it, but only if they know.

@Mia, you need everything except furniture.
And to get in by bus, if your going in for 9, about half an hour, any other time about15-20 mins. The Luas will have you in in half an hour, including walks, and cycling takes less than 15 mins
