If anyone is looking for a cheap multi-function remote have a look at this Lidl offer.
    http://www.lidl.ie/cps/rde/xchg/lidl_ri_ie/hs.xsl/index_13006.htm

This unit contains thousands of codes but is also a learning remote that you can program from your exisiting units. I found it very useful in that I programmed it to turn the TV on/off and control the combo box channels. This avoids my elderly folks getting into menus etc by accident or changing settings they don't understand.

PS I have no connection to Lidl.

I wonder can it learn from a Media Center RC6 remote?

I dont see why not. You simply put the remotes face-to-face and press the right combination of buttons to "teach" it the new codes.

Might grab a few. What is it like in the hand, ergonomically? Looks a bit angular.

The buttons are a bit on the small side as is often the case with these multi-function thingys but, hey, for €8 what do you expect.

I have one of the lidl remotes and it has a MCE remote code so doesnt have to "learn" anything.

    Great remote for the price.

Had one it's a nice quality remote, but it wasn't able to operate a silvercrest SL65 satellite receiver despite being a silvercrest remote. Tried the learning function but it didn't work to well.

How do you mean it doesn't have to learn, i know it has brand codes built in, but what if the brand codes don't match.

Still trying to find a remote that has a code for my Thomson TV. :(

Learning feature sounds good though, albeit pointless if you're using this to replace a lost remote. :p

The lidl remote should work your Thompson TV , sometimes you need to try the Ferguson codes if the Thompson ones don't work, they are much the same .

    How programmable is it?

I currently have a Saorview stb and to use it I switch on the tv with the tv remote, select a channel (just to get the tv working) and then select the hdmi option from the av list. Then I switch to the stb remote to change channel/volume etc.

Ideally I'd like this remote to be programmable so that it will do all that automatically with one remote. Is that possible with this or other all-in-one remotes?

Good question. Would be a fantastic bargin if it supports "macros"

I have a slightly different model to this one, but it seems to differ only in the key layout. It does do macros, but I've no idea how well it works as I haven't tried it.

Should be. They give an example in the instruction book (I have an older version of this remote) of turning on the TV, selecting an input, and turning on the VCR to 'play'.

"Each macro can control up to 10 commands"

One downside is that you have to press "Macro" and a number to get it, rather than being able to assign it to a single button.

PS: if anybody finds built-in codes in this R/C to control Saorview boxes, please post it!

Just got hold of one of these ..... and I like!

Has a big list of codes preset .... can select by Brand and then code.

Easily set up old Sharp TV and a Silvercrest STB.
I could not find a suitable code for the Ariva 120 Combi STB ..... so used Learning Mode successfully.

The TV would not come back from standby for ages ..... must have been the remote because it now does it :D

No idea of Macros ..... but there is a Macro button on it, so presumably it supports the function.

Comprehensive manual for those who like to read first :D plus a booklet listing all codes it has preprogrammed.

3 and maybe 4 remotes being replaced by this ...... so happy chappy ;)

What silvercrest STB do you have, I tried one of these before with a silvercrest sl65 satellite receiver and it wouldn't work, maybe they have updated it.

SL65/12 is what is on the cover of the manual

It could be the camping version you have? has it a 12V transformer supply instead of a regular 220v plug? There were two types, I have the 220v one . It sounds promising I might try it , I can always bring it back if it doesn't work.

Can you control a sky box with one of these?

The PSU is external to the device as with a lot of low power consumption devices. The 'brick' plugs into the mains and supplies DC to the STB ...... so I guess it is also suitable to run from any compliant DC source.

Yes it is a small dish that folds for easy transport .... so is probably designed for camping.

I have no difficulty controlling an old Pace Sky box .... have not tried it on a modern one, but expect it should be good.

The only difficulties I had yesterday was trying to figure out the FAV/EPG button use for the Sat receivers I was setting up.

Might have a look at that today ..... or not ..... not something I use often ...

Looks like a good deal - even if it gets rid of 2 or 3 of my gazillion remotes around the place

Anyone tell me the model number of the remote - might do a bit of investigation before I splash out €8

(looking for it to be able to control a Panasonic TX-L42D25 and a HTPC so might need a bit of code breaking if I do get it!)

Try pressing the "S" button then the "EPG" button. It's in the manual of the remote I got a year ago, so may function similarly.

Otherwise, find an unused button, and "learn" the EPG button off the original remote.

Got one of these remote controls to make life a bit easier, cannot get the epg button to function. I've tried all the tv codes and finally tried the learning function, will not copy the epg of the original to the epg button on the Silvercrest. It will copy it to any other button though - not what I want.
I think it should have an 'i' button which most original Sat/DTT receiver remotes now have, it can be copied to another button, but again not what I want. Other buttons don't matter that much. I will be returning it.

My Silvercrest shows the EPG from the combination 'S' then FAV/EPG .... as it should.

    I too miss the 'i' button ....

What you must remember about this or any other similar remote is that you must be prepared to be patient in setting it up. There are hundreds of combinations you can use for the various remotes/equipment and unless you are careful, you could duplicate/delete/confuse both yourself and that remote. I found it was best to make a list of all the functions & shortcuts as I went along. The Learning Function is great, but can also be tedious. I would'nt throw it out just because of a difficulty in getting one function to work. For the money, there is no better value to be found anywhere.

Would anyone know how to program a long button press when creating a macro on this remote?
My TV needs a button to be held down for at least 3 seconds before it will switch on. So far I've been defeated while trying to program this into the remote.

I've found LIDL to be fairly liberal about returning stuff that is obviously bought there even without having the receipt

Can you not try "learning" it to the power/standby button on the remote? But don't press your original remote power button for 3 seconds, just briefly press it when teaching, then try the 3 seconds with the universal remote.
