"WITH just over two weeks to the start of their World Cup campaign, flanker Sean O'Brien has emerged as a major injury concern for Ireland.
The European Player of the Year is understood to have sustained a heavy knee injury in training which places him in doubt for Ireland's opening clash with the US on September 11 and rules him out of the final warm-up international against England at Lansdowne Road on Saturday."

Just in from The Irish Independent..

I bet you its out for England and precaution against USA. TBH, He prob wouldn't have been played against the USA anyway.

Maybe Shane Jennings is at home with a load of back-row Voodoo dolls. He strikes me as the type who'd be into the black arts alright.

TBH, if he's back for the Australia game then it's all good. Shouldn't have been in the team for Saturday anyway as Ferris and Wallace need the game time much more, and if he misses the USA game, no big deal. He didn't look too rusty against France so I don't think lack of game time will hold him back.

O'Brien has been THE standout Irish player of the last 12 months no doubt, but in fairness, if he is ruled out for a few games, the loss is negated by having someone of Ferris' quality to step into the breach. If he can get close to the form he showed in South Africa 2 years ago, then it's all good. Back row is one of the few areas where we can absorb an injury - although without a true 7...........

Can't be as bad as they're making it out to be if this is true...

The independent is such a crappy sensationalist rag it's very hard to take anything from the article.

It says one things and the actual article suggest the other. Let's hope it's not too bad and he is back on his feet by Australia.

...Really can not stand the Irish Independent - worst tabloid because it pretends to be something else.

O’Brien, however, is currently togged out and ready for training at the Aviva Stadium, according to Des Cahill on RTÉ radio

that might be just to chat to the fans etc though. isnt it an open session?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,969 ✭✭✭buck65

I heard he is out this weekend and a slight doubt for the USA game so probably a week on the sidelines if that's true.
Still we might have another injury after the weekend if this game turns into a physical test.
    One game too many?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,881 ✭✭✭PhatPiggins

Sounds like he's grand, more of a precaution then anything.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 173 ✭✭macman2010

hugh Farrally is talking out his hole, kidney says he's fine.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,883 ✭✭✭shuffol

Indo making a meal out of it I reckon, very sketchy on details, no quotes. I'd say he got a knock and is ruled out of the England game but no more. Was listening to RTE radio too and Des Cahill said he was togged out, open session or not they woudnt have him togged out if he was a major injury concern. Fingers crossed anyway, Ferris or no Ferris his absence would be calamitous.

Appears to be crap.. Kidney said minor knock - expects him back.

This is the independent trying to get hits without there being substance or information.

Like I said - Rag. No journalistic integrity.

""Sean will be fine - it wasn't prudent to include him this weekend but, as you can see, he's in training already and he'll work his way back in." Declan Kidney

OMG THANKS GOD. Our world cup is saved.

In 40 years time people will still talk about where they were when the found out Sean O'Briens knee-nack, was a mere knee-gah after all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 180 ✭✭Ste_D

Whatever about our strength in depth in the back row. No side can afford to lose the European player of the year 2 weeks before the World Cup.

  • Wouldn't be surprised if his super-body just fixed itself overnight.

He's made of stronger stuff than most of us!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 205 ✭✭simonmln

Sounds like a precaution more than anything. Might even be good.

Hell miss the English game, and the first world cup game. England isnt too worrying, and we should be able to put away the US without him.

Then hell come out probably ready to kill someone!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 974 ✭✭✭BarackPyjama

He was working with the physio in training and looked grand. He'll be given time to rest against England and USA I'd say and then he'll unleash hell on Australia.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 746 ✭✭✭skregs

He's overrated anyway, Niall Ronan is a more dynamic ball-carrier who can do more than just run hard in one direction

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,071 ✭✭✭Conas

He was never going to be playing against England anyway.

But he runs in that direction so well!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,071 ✭✭✭Conas

Niall Ronan is a dynamic ball carrier so long as he doesn't run into someone. Sean just wants to run into someone, so he can go through them. There's your difference.

I think it's fairly safe to conclude that he was joking about Ronan...

Hey lads, i love reading through the rugby forum but very rarely post but hopefully i can set something straight. I work in a karting centre in Dublin and yesterday the Ireland squad was over for a karting session. Several players sat out the racing but Sean O Brien not only took part he wiped the floor with everyone!!..Certainly didn't appear injured and if he was carrying a knock i assume he would not have taken part..Just thought i just let everyone know..

Kick a 50 meter peno, from the touch line:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 489 ✭✭petebricquette

Ah yeah, sure he was grand out training with the lads on Thursday at the open session. He didn't take part in any of their semi-contact drills; rather he seemed to be doing some strength/balance work around one of the try lines. Sexy bastard.

You see, the mistake Fenby made there was that he tried to tackle him. You need an elephant gun to take the man down.
