Posting from my laptop because my desktop is ****ed!

I have an ATI Radeon HD 5800 Series graphics card.

Right, I was playing a game of League of Legends and my screen just froze and went white with lines, I was on skype at the time and I could still hear the person and talk to them... so it points towards the GFX card, if it was a CPU issue the computer would have just crashed...

Assuming it was just a harmless crash, I attempted to reboot but it wouldn't go past the loading windows page. After 20 minutes of rebooting and "disk repair" I finally got in, my CPU + GPU temps were normal. Then it crashed again after about a half an hour. I haven't been able to get back in since.

I opened the PC, it was a bit dusty... I cleared it out but that made no difference. I took out the graphics card and examined it, I couldn't see any problems......

Symptoms: When I start up the PC, the graphics card is REALLY REALLY loud, it sounds like an aircraft is taking off. After a while it just turns itself off.

Nothing is coming up on my screen now.

This is the first time this has happened and nothing like this has ever happened to me before.

My graphics card cost around €400 and I don't have it much more than a year so it's a bit frustrating.... seems like there's something seriously wrong here unfortunately.

Hopefully it's not fried... anybody got any ideas?

Do you have onboard graphics or an old card to stick into the machine to test the system out?

Well alot of modern cards spin up fast when powered on, my 6950 gives a mighty whirr when powered but quiet down then.... this is because the fans are given full power until the cards bios is loaded which then takes charge and slows them as there is no need.

What exact model is your card? It may be possible to re-flash the bios onto it and see if thats the issue.

Beg or borrow a temporary card to test your PC. If it works with that then clean the 5800 and try it again. If it is only a year old it may be within warranty - in fact, some manufacturers offer longer warranties than one year.
